How can HR block get you a refund of more than you paid in taxes ?
both me and my friend fillout out our Taxes using a tax program but then my friend didn't think she was getting enough back so she took her taxes to HR Block now she told me she's getting back 5800 but when we did the taxes on the program she only paid 3300 in taxes for the year . . she told me I should go to HR Block so I could get more back but I don't believe you can get back more than you've paid or am I wrong ?

My wife and I are using the online HR Block e-filing software. We only paid in about 500 dollars in taxes but the software shows that we're getting 1500 dollars back. This as due to the Additional Child Tax Credit, as we have one qualifying child. If your friend has two children, then this would make sense.
The calculations for the Additional Child Tax Credit are rather complicated so I'd rather not get into the details.
As far as I know, this is the only way that one can receive a refund for more than they withheld.

The tax refund a person gets reflects that amount of income tax the person overpaid. Likewise, if you owe money, that means you didn't pay enough in tax. It depends on how many deductions a person has, their tax bracket, etc.
So, if your friend really is getting back $2K more than expected, it was certainly a worthwhile trip to have her taxes prepared in person. But $2K does sound like it's a bit much...

does your friend have children. If so you might of not been getting the child tax credits for children the first time and when she went to hrblock they added that in. We paid in 651 in federal made about 30,000 and are getting 5500 back most of it is the child credits.
