Well, it depends on the family name. The family names usually told their occupations (i.e. Cooper= barrel maker; Smith= metal/black smith; Clarke/Clark= cleric or clerk (Old English spelling); any thing with -son usually means "the son of" and is used heavily in Scandinavia, like Jorgandson). In Spanish, for example, the use of "de la" sometimes means the location of the family; "del Rios" means "of/from the rivers." Certainly you know what does it mean. KATAPODIS/ÎÎΤÎÎ ÎÎÎΣ.It ,means, follow somebody very closely.It comes also from the Ionian Sea pirates and corsairs who they were chasing the Turkish boats in the Ionian Sea and generally everywhere.
