I just had two done recently and two done about four years ago and this time was way less painful. The worst part is having to keep your mouth open for an extended period of time, your jaw will be sore. Also eat before because I was numb and could not eat for about two hours after (and it took about an hour to do), i was so hungry when I left and had to wait to eat.

The thought of the root canal is much worse than actually having it done. When I had mine done I only had pain when I got the novacaine. The process once the root is removed is very easy and not painful at all. Be sure to tell the dentist that you are uneasy and want no pain.

Actually, to clarify a little, when you have a root canal done, the dentist removes the NERVE from the root, NOT the root itself. The only pain you should have is from the injection, and your jaw will probably be sore.

Source(s): Dental assistant and I've had it done twice.

The mouth is numbed completely so no pain during the procedure. The procedure is lengthy though and that can be uncomfortable. Once the root canal is over no root in the tooth to cause pain but the jaw can be sore and ache for a couple days.

just to clear things up that another poster said, they do not remove the root in a root canal - just the nerve/nerves located in the root. if they removed the root, then the tooth would be attached to nothing, and would just sit on top of your gums.

There is not a clear-cut answer to this question. Every person reacts differently to the different methods of numbing. For some people a couple of shots works and for other, like myself, no amount of numbing works so I have to be put under with IV sedation. After the fact there is some discomfort but if you take your meds and keep the area moisturized to avoid dry socket it's not too bad.

Getting the novocain is the most painful part. After the dentist is through, you might have some discomfort in the muscles around your mouth just from having it open and worked on. The dentist will most likely give you some pain medication, but you might well not need it.

Ask them to gas you... you cannot eat anything 12 hours before you go in. You wake up and everything is done and you don't remember a thing. Some times the shots they give you to numb you hurt worse. Best of luck.
