Dog scratching the door!!!?
When my dog wants in if I don't immediatly open the door she starts scratching at it. Even when we aren't home if I leave her outside she scratches the door. She tore up the weather stripping on my door and we just replaced it. How do I get her to stop this?
Well she has to go outside to go to the bathroom! She can't just stay inside 24 hours a day.
Also, I can't put in a doggie door for her. I have french doors and anyway she is a great dane bullmastiff mix and can't fit a doggie door. She can't scratch up the actual door, just the weather stripping.

well why don't you just get a doggy door and put it on so that the dog can go in and out as she pleases . I had it for my dog and she loved it . you can find one at home depot , petsmart .
good luck

What we call this type of behavior is an extinction burst. What it means is that you and your husband did a great job at training your dogs!! It put the behavior of sleeping in your room on "extinction". Then, your daughter (Bless her!!) let the dogs sleep with her, and the dogs got the idea that - hey!! wait a minute!! maybe if I am just really diligent I will get rewarded with sleeping in Mom's bed!! So, even though you have continued to refuse entry, the dogs are showing an extinction burst...the behavior is back with a vengeance because the dog is trying to figure out how much behavior output will finally win him the jackpot - your bed!! You can set up a training regime to help, but it'll take effort (and cooperation from EVERYONE in the house. Your dogs want to access you and your husband (attention), and they want to access your bed -(tangible). Can you make the living room more appealing - like take a sheet from your bed (that you have slept on - preferably a lot) and put it on their sleeping surface? There is a really cool item for sale through Dr. Sophia Yin. She is a veterinary behaviorist. It is a remote treat giver. So, you and your husband are in your room, and when the dogs go near their living room sleep area they get treated by you releasing a treat using a remote. When they do scratch at the door...totally ignore it. Any yelling at the dogs just encourages them. They see that as a step in the right direction. Hope that helps!!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://tr.im/MXChN
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

There's not really a way to stop her if you want her to stay outside when you're gone get her a kennel and put her in the kennel. My dog does the same thing but we have a door that doesn't get scratch marks on it... maybe you should invest in that kind of door/.

This is excessive behavior, and is hard to stop becasue you may not be there at the time to correct her. I am pretty good with dogs but I would have to contact a professional for this, or you can get a doggies door so she can come in and out as she wishes.
sorry I could not be more help.
Source(s): P.S. This can be stopped if you get the proper trainning, There is nothing wrong with leaving your dog outside as long as you leave them the proper provisions depending on the weather, they are animanls and are fully capable of living out doors people. Do not humanize your pets, this causes behavior issues for them. - 1 decade ago
They sell these protective door covers so it will prevent scratch marks on the door.
I think in Pet Stores or on line.

Try spraying "bitter apple" or a similar product on this. I use it for my ferret even though it's technically for dogs and cats. It smells/ states horrible to animals (doesn't smell that bad to me, soft smell of hairspray) and keeps them away from it.
it's worth a try.

the only solution i can think of (other than cutting her feet off) is for you to TAKE her out, rather than PUTTING her out. either that, or reconcile yourself to havng torn up weatherstripping.
