Ball Python won't eat?
We don't really know much about snakes, watching it for our friend in the military. Rufus is about 3.5 feet long. The first time, he ate the mice, but this time, we have offered the mice 3 times in the past 2 days and he crawls out of the box, uninterested. The last time we fed was about Jan 8th, he said to feed him every 3 weeks. We feed him in a separate box from his aquarium, and the mice are live, now the mice are fighting each other in their box, what do we do?

You have all very good answers but I dont agree with one of them....as far as feeding live or killed prey you should ask the owner what the snake was eating. If he was being fed live prey than feed him live prey. If he doesn't strike and kill the mouse within a few minutes or so take the mouse out and try again in a few days. Mice can and will do damage to a snake if they are left in there without being watched. Snakes can go long periods of time without eating. Always make sure the temperature is correct, if it is too low the snake will loose its appetite. If he is a shy eater than feed him at night in a darker room.

Ball pythons routinely go off food. The mice need to be humanely euthanized. Feeding live prey is very dangerous for the snake. The mice themselves will starve to death rapidly if not given food and water. It's best to just euthanize them. A quick strike of the head against a hard object like a counter top will kill them instantly. You can freeze them and save them to feed later. Most snakes will take frozen/thawed prey easily. Make sure the frozen mice are well heated in hot water. Do not offer food for another week to 10 days. Offering too often can be stressful for the snake and create a chronic non feeding response. Snakes can go many months without food, and ball pythons have been known to go as long as 7 months without eating. I would wait 10 days, offer a frozen/thawed mouse or rat on the end of a pair of tongs (b-b-q tongs work too if you don't have hemostats). I use very hot water to heat the mouse. It needs to be quite warm to mimic the live animal, and pythons feed by sensing heat. Feed at dusk or just after dark in a subdued lighting setup. Most pythons are nocturnal and hunt at night so this is the best time to offer. Heat the rat until just before feeding. Dry it well and offer at the end of tongs. Try holding it just near the nose just above the head. Moving it a bit can sometimes elicit a strike. If it doesn't eat, throw out the rat and try another in a week or two.

Snakes can go a long time without eating so dont panic! Hows the temp? He very well may be to chilled to eat. Also, the mice can and will eat at the snake if left alone for long. They can eat out the eyes, cause big sores and lots of other problems. Pull out the mice and try in a week or so, good luck!

Don't worry snakes can go a long time with out eating. What is the temp? It needs to be warm enough for him before he will eat. also are or has his eyes been clouded over? if the snake is getting ready to shed a lot of the time they will reject food. so just try again in a few days. good luck
