XP file sharing to a partition?

in the video what is he trying to achieve in pointing the file sharing to a 10 gig partition.

Is it for internet, networking? how would it capture a virus or malware.

    If you are a hardcore files sharer, then it is highly recommended to use a separate partition for your files. You should separate the shared files from the Windows installation because these files tend to change rapidly (you download them, delete them and so on) and therefore the partition might become heavily fragmented making Windows much slower if used on the same partition as the Windows installation.
