how is he selfish and proud?

During his years lost at sea, Odysseus is caught in what seems to be a war mentality, rather then the cunning within him he must later utilize. He is selfish and proud during the entire encounter with the cyclops which essentially doomed his crew as he called out his name to the blinded giant as he attacked their leaving ship. It led to the anger of the sea god. That is one of the earlier examples. They would not have stopped on the island if Odysseus did not want to take the sheep and gain glory for himself in the land.
In the time in which the story takes place, Odysseus reverts to this war mentality, his proud self, during his final fight with the suitors, in which he becomes the sort of killing machine which he was in the war.
I hope that helps, otherwise I could try to find one of my old essays.

He was selfish because he wouldn't ask Poseidon for forgiveness even though he knew he was putting lives at risk.
And he was proud when he thought he was better than the gods, and also when he refused to ask Poseidon for forgiveness.
