High Speed Wireless Network for idiots?

As I am poor, I've been deprived and had dial up my whole life. Now it's time to move out on my own to a new apartment and I want high speed! I've been looking up all kinds of things, modems, routers, access points, adapters, and I'm nothing but confused. Can anyone explain just about everything about setting up this thing? What do I need to buy? What services do I need?

Update:

I also don't plan on having a landline phone or cable tv, just the internet service.

First of all you need a high speed internet like comcast . Dsl or cable. Then you need to buy a router

    linksys

    or

    netgear

I would recommend linksys. Then all you need to do is connect the router and you have wireless internet.

get AT&T DSL for 14.99 a month. Best and worth the price. when you look through the site, usually AT&T has 2WIRE wireless routers that sometimes free with rebate. Or, you can just go to an electronic store and buy a router there. (fyi DSL speeds up your phone line, so you will need phone converters to connect it to your landline phone in order to use it to talk)

so really, you need to get a service provider (ISP) and a wireless router. (you dont have to get it from them, but i recommend it, because you can call ATT to help you with them.) And you will need to get phone line converters, one for each phone. (i think it might come with the router)

a Modem is what you will be getting from your cable or telephone company. If you have a single desktop computer that's all you'll need to get online. If you have more than one desktop computer then you'll need an Ethernet router that you hook up the desktop computers with ethernet cables. It's when you get a laptop computer is when you want a WiFi router.

well it really dose not matter what provider you get it from but, the slower the badder (i would recommend broadband) you need an Internet connection and a wireless router they vary prices from store and quality. It usealy comes with a manual.

to mattjlew, DSL doesn't speed up your phone line, and the origianl poster needs in-line filters to cancel out the electrical interfernce from things like phones which cause the 'net connection to drop out, not so he can talk on the phone.
