    Mobile Phone Number Portability

    What is 'Number Portability' ?

In September 2001 a new method of porting numbers between Networks was introduced. This new porting process has improved the time it takes to complete the procedure of transferring your old number between Networks.

Number portability enables you to request a transfer and subsequently allows another Network to request that your mobile telephone number be transferred to them.

How do I 'port' my number ?

Contact your current Network and ask them to issue you with a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC). They have up to two days to comply with your request.

When you receive your PAC you have up to 30 days in which to inform your new Network of your Porting Authorisation Code. Your new Network must then give you & your current Network at least 7 calender days notice of the port date.

    Restrictions and Conditions

Your number must be live and connected.

If you are still tied to a contract with your current Network you need to pay off the remaining term.

You can transfer a Pay As You Go mobile phone number as long as it is still connected, however, any credits that you may have cannot be transferred to your new Network.

If you intend to keep the same phone check with your new Network that your existing phone will operate on their network.

Your contract with your existing Network will be considered terminated when a request is received from your new Network to transfer your mobile phone number.

If you think that your existing Network has not dealt with your Mobile Number Porting request satisfactorily, and you wish to make a complaint, you can contact OFTEL on the following number : 020 7634 8888

    Yes you can.

You need what is called a PAC which stands for Porting Authorisation Code, as long as your SIM is still active it allows you to change from one network to another. It consists of three letters and six numbers i.e.ONE123456

You first need to change over to your other network, you will get a temporary number that will be copied over once you transfer your old number accross to them.

Call into T-mobile, you will actually need to go through to Loyalty & Retentions rather than Customer Services - Customer Services cannot issue PAC codes. So when you are going through the automated system press the option to go through to cancelations - remember they can be busy so best you call through the day when they are not so busy.

Once you have your PAC then dial your new network and give it to them, they then 'port-in' your number, this can take up to 7 days. [Your PAC is only valid for 30 days].

Before you do this remember to copy any information on your existing SIM card on to your new SIM card otherwise you will loose all of your information once the number transfers to the new network - you can do this yourself or go to a mobile store to ask them to help you do it.

Yes I have just recently done it. I was with Vodafone for years on pay as you go and have transferred to O2. I bought the 4n of my choice and was advised to ring vodafone, They give you a special Pac code so you can keep your old number and then you ring your new network with that information. Mine was changed over withing 48hours without any hassle. Good luck.
