Why do most police detectives and chiefs have mustaches?

It must be mandatory unless undercover. I watch a lot of forensic tv murder documentaries and have noticed this a lot.

Just like any fad mustaches come and go as a facial feature. It could be the TV shows that influence the fad, who knows. When the regulations were loosened to allow facial hair many went for it and wore mustaches just because they could. Even patrolmen are allowed to wear mustaches now.

I'm guessing they do that to look a little less like police officers...makes them look more like "normal" human beings and can help with undercover operations.
