I'm looking for the best desk top with media capabilities for under $1000. I'm afraid of HP because I heard that they freeze up.

Well, personally I have had 2 HP's and never had any problems with them, freezing up would do more with the parts in it, which do vary from different models, however HP, Compaq, and others do not make their own parts, and you'll find that many parts between computers are the same. Anyway, HP's are typically more expensive ranging from approx. $900-$2000, for the price you are looking for I would recommend an Acer or Compaq, they are fairly cheap and reliable.

DO NOT BUY AN EMACHINE-worst computers
anyway I would go with a macmini if your a mac person, if not then I think the most reliable PC companies are Sony,Dell, and Hp. Sony doesn't really have any under 1000. Dell's new computer is just over 1000. So I would say an HP

Look at their Reflect models or Mark 1 Defender (their gaming line). The mark 1 defender is $1100 but they are always having secret sales so you might be able to get it below 1000 and thats awesome for a gaming model.

hmm buying a store bought desktop is good but, in my opinion, buying an empty computer case and building it with new and better parts would be better. In this way you wont be worried about chosing which name brand comp. you should have bought.

All computers freeze at one time or another usually. I would go with dell.com or carbonfrost.com for cheap customizable computers
