I put my sim card in a new phone and it asked for a subcity code does anyone know what this means?

You've taken a SIM card from one network, and put it in another that is locked to a different carrier.
An example: You have a Nextel SIM card, and put it in a phone that is locked to AT&T network, the AT&T phone which is locked won't operate with a Nextel sim card.
