Is this turkey-based joke funny?

Question

On a recent trip to Las Vegas, "comedian of the year" Rita Ruder was doing shows at Harrahs. One of the jokes used to advertise her show was:

"Most turkeys taste better the day after. My mother's tasted better the day before."

Maybe it's just because I'm not American (although my wife is and she doesn't get it either), but I just can't figure out what she means, what this joke is about or why it is funny.

I didn't see the show as a result of not getting the gag on the advert.

Please help me 'get' it!

Obviously tasted better the day before because it was not cooked, and therefore her mother was a cr*p cook !!

She's talking about Thanksgiving. Most turkeys taste better the day after you cook it, but her mom was such a lousy cook, that the turkey tasted better the day before she cooked it.
