Concert key for french horn?
I'm reading french horn music right now that shows an F. If I'm transposing that to a key of C instrument, what note is it?

Because the French Horn is in the key of F, any note in the key of F translates to the Key of C by the following method. Since Concert C is the note G in the key of F, any note in the key of F will be three whole steps lower than the corresponding note in the key of C OR any note in the key of F will be three and a half whole steps higher than the corresponding note in the key of C. This means that if you read the note F in french horn music, it directly translates to the note Bb in concert C.
Tip: an easy method to transpose is to write a C concert major, then write under the notes first the notes if they were concert C (or just regularly). The under that, write it F as if it were the C note and then fill in the rest of the scale as if it were an F major scale. This way you will have a reference scale with both Concert C and Concert F notes.
I hope it helps.

Right, the horn is in F. So if you want the horn to play a concert C natural, you would write a G natural in the horn part. If you want a concert F natural, you would write a C natural in the horn part. It's up a fifth or down a fourth from the concert pitch. Make sense?

I have to disagree, it is easier to learn horn if you already know another instrument, but the other way around is a lot harder. It is mostly because of the embouchure, and they key the horn is in, the easiest to switch to from horn is trumpet. The pros of the horn: -gets really good parts the better you get -not many people play it (so they say, but its really not true) -every band or orchestra always wants more horns -there is always more the learn with the horn -never gets boring!
