no they should not but what can they do with all the unwanted animals they have that they cant re home stop the BYB and there wont be so many unwanted dogs and cats being put to sleep

  • For all you people saying NO, I think your thinking about how the poor lil animals get killed for no reason. My husband works for animal services and I know what dangers there are. How would you feel if a rabid dogs growls and tries to bites you and chases you? Or a feral cat that scratches and bites you until you BLEED. OR the sick little kittens that are going to have a loooong drawn out death. I am all for the killing of those animals because it makes the public AND other animals safer! And no I dont agree with them killing animals after a week but that only happens at FEW animal shelters in the country. What else would you do with the overpopulated animals? They say there is 7 dogs for 1 human...thats the reason everyone should spay or neuter their dogs and cats. So they dont have un needed put downs.

Unfortunately, most shelters, if they cannot find a home for an animal in a "reasonable" amount of time, they do put the animals to sleep. Some shelters have as little as a 3 week program where they kill the pet if it has been there that long but each place is different. Sorry.

Not a week, I think 6 months is better. I understand that animal shelters cannot accommodate all those animals, and if an animal hasn't been adopted after 6 months, and another source of home hasn't been found then yes, the poor thing needs to be put to sleep. But no not after a week. That really didn't give them much of a chance to find a home, did it?

There is no way that the animals are killed after 1 week. I know for a fact if an animal is in its worst condition, and the shelter knows for a fact no one will adopt it. It is likely the dog will be euthanized (put to sleep). On Animal Planet they do find the cutest dogs and animals that are in a bad condition but the they are adoptable in one way or another. If you know the shelter that does this to the animals i would report it to the ASPCA/SPCA.

If the dog is killed that would be put in the 'slot' will animal abuse/cruelty.

All animals will NOT eventually get adopted. Take for instance the shelter I used to work at. We got in 30 cats a day on average and only had about 5 adoptions a day on weekdays and about 7-10 on the weekend.. We had 50 cages to work with in the adoption area.

Let's say we started with all the cages empty on Monday just for an example. By closing time on Monday, we have 25 cages with cats in them because there were 5 adoptions. Tuesday, we get 30 more cats but 5 are adopted. Now, all of our cages are full by closing on Tuesday night even with the adoptions. On Wednesday, 30 more cats come in which go right into stray hold where there are only 25 cages. But, 5 cats get moved into the adoption area because 5 got adopted. Thursday morning rolls around and there are only 5 empty cages for the 30 or so cats that will be coming in. There might be 5 adoptions, or, maybe people won't come out because it's rainy today. Either way, we need 20 empty cages to fill up immediately with more cats.. That means 20 cats that have been in the adoption area need to be put to sleep to make room for the new ones to come in to allow the owners a chance to reclaim strays...

They also worked with rescues, but, our area rescues only adopted out about 10 cats a month. So, of the nearly 1000 cats that come in during the month, rescue will be able to take 10-20.

That's the reality in many areas. Areas that have been spaying and neutering all cats before they are adopted out and have low cost spay/neuter will eventually have better numbers.

Where I live now, the animal control shelter is no kill for adoptable dogs and low kill for cats. But, that's only because fewer come in because they have been neutering everything leaving the local shelter for about a decade and it's finally starting to work.

There are shelters in rural areas that only have a couple dogs and cats adopted a month and hundreds coming in. Where are they supposed to put those pets?

Now, I do think that animal shelters should do the best they can with the resources they have and always look for ways to improve.. For instance, Peta gets millions in donations and kills most of the animals they receive. I've seen better save numbers at small rural shelters.

If you want to help, go volunteer and make a difference. Those shelter workers don't want to kill animals. How bout you go help them out instead of criticizing them from your comfy computer chair?

yes i agree it is very cruel but animal shelters are there b/c some people do not take care of their animals. u should have your female cat or dog spayed so there want be and overflow in population. think a/b it these animals who are kept in the shelter are normally street animals they have no home or either have been put out. there are far more animals that die everyday from starvation and illness than are killed in animal shelters.

think of it this way. if u were a dog and ur owner had to give u up would u want to go to a kill shelter that gives u time to get a new home but after that time is up u dont have to worry anymore. or go to a no kill shelter and spend the rest of ur days miserable in a kennel. kill shelters are ok in some situations.

I think animal shelters should wait a month to find the animal a new home. There are too many unwanted animals in this world and a lot of people take the responsibility until they can't deal with it anymore. That then leads to abandoned animals. Not to mention, a lot of people don't spay/nutuer their pets which leads to unwanted pregnancies.

I think people should spay and nueter there animals so there are no more unwanted animals to be killed. I also think more money should go into rehabilitating strays and finding them new homes. A week is not enough time but there are to many animals coming in they run out of room. Bottom line is pet owners should be held responsible. THey should also spay and nueter more ferrel cats.

    Peace
