I think carpet is nice for bedrooms becuz it makes them look cosy! I would put hardwood throughout the rest of the house though, which is especially good if you have children as they sometimes spill stuff. It can be easily cleaned up unlike carpets.

Keep the hardwood! When I built my house I put hardwood throughout my house except carpet in the bedrooms and I regret putting carpet in the bedrooms! The carpet gets so dirty and not only that ...after you sweep and mop the hardwood you see what is actually being absorbed into your carpet! So keep the hardwood and invest in nice rugs that you can replace every few years! Much cheaper than wall to wall carpet and cleaner!

Hi, we have just done two homes with new flooring, including wood, carpet, floating and tiles. Previous answer is right in that the wood dust will get everywhere no matter what you do to try and stop it. On the other hand, once you have polished your floors it takes a while for the varnish or polyeurethane to harden fully so any harsh movement possibly will damage the surface. New carpet sheds fibres for months so you will need to be careful that you dont get fibres in your wood finish. If you carpet first you will have to be careful around the edges that meet the carpet or you will ruin your carpet. Personally I dont like new wooden floors that are shiny, they show every fibre and every bit of dust. Lots of work to keep looking fantastic , especially high gloss ones. If I had to choose I would do the wood floors first. Give them plenty of time to harden up. When it is time to do the carpets you can always cover your wooden floor with recycled clean carpet till the new carpet is laid and vacumed several times. You can always get the new carpet steam cleaned to get the dust out , but it is impossible to remove fibres and dust from varnish or polyeurethane without resanding. Good Luck

carpet- I don't like cold floors in the morning. Not to mention they are loud for the 2:00 am pee break.

carpet over hardwood...you don't want the kids to hear you and the hubby at night.
