Small dog ate part of chocolate bar?

I saw a bunch of dog-chocolate related questions but I wanted to be specific as it's my beloved dog's health in question.

I had a Moose bar, which is like milk chocolate over nuts, popcorn, and caramel. The package says it is 2oz or 56grams and I had eaten a bite off of it already. I'm not sure if one dog ate all of it or if both shared (I have two Boston Terriers, both around 15 pounds). I found chocolaty vomit under my bed, which is the female's usual hangout so it seems that she definitely at least had some but my male is looking very guilty, too (though this could just be because he found the chocolate as he is always searching throw shopping bags for toys; then again I can't see him not attempting to scarf down the whole thing...). My female is such a nervous, anxiety prone dog already that I'm afraid for her! Any advice would be appreciated! I am working from 8am-11pm tomorrow so I really won't have an opportunity to take them to the vet, and I'm a nanny so I can't cancel!

Update:

Umm thanks to the people who said she will pretty much definitely die because dogs shouldn't eat chocolate... obviously I know they shouldn't eat chocolate (have since I was about 4) or I wouldn't be asking, right?

She has thrown up 2x; milk chocolate colored thick liquid. She is always nervous and very jittery (rescue dog, we think she was previously abused) so it is hard to tell if she is acting "odd"... since she is just odd to begin with.

I put her in the kitchen with a big bowl of water. She has never eaten grass that I've seen (though she tends to throw up at least a few times a week, like white foam from digestion acid or whatever; she eats a high quality food, not iams or some crap like that) so I'm not sure I would be able to convince her to do this. Anything else I could do to induce more vomiting? I saw someone on another post mention salt, how would that work?

Update 2:

I know about being careful; it was in my bag and I totally forgot that I had even bought it (it was a hungry impulse buy). My dog always searches through bags because ONE TIME he saw me pull a toy for him out of it and then put it back in. Nothing like this has happened before now.

The dog is just over 2 years we think, is around 14 pounds, and is healthy aside from the previously mentioned case of bad nerves and the fact the she regularly vomits what seems to be digestion-liquid foam.

I wouldn't worry too much. If it was dark chocolate, I would definitely take them to the vets, but milk chocolate at least has a smaller amount of the ingrediant (direct from the coco bean) that affects dogs. The vomiting could have also been caused by the nuts, popcorn or carmel being stuck - dogs are very good at vomiting if something is stuck.

I have a friend who sometimes gives her dogs chocolate - I personally wouldn't do this but her dogs are healthy and over 10 years old so have lived good lives.

If when you get home and they have no energy and are still throwing up, then take them to emergency vet straight away.

If they seem to be their 'normal' selves - as in what is normal for them, then they should be ok.

You could try Apple Cider Vinegar in their water - only about a teaspoon - ACV tends to clean out the system - is completely safe for dogs - it's role is just to flush out the system. So for a good detox tomorrow go and get some ACV (organic is the best) and maybe give it to them for the next couple of days. I have friends that give it to their dog every day, other friends that give it to their horses on a regular basis for the same purpose. I personally only give it to my dog once a week - just to keep everything healthy but that's a personal choice.

Again, if she has already vomited - it probably didn't have time to do too much to her system.

Just watch her when you get home, and if she really is not herself then take her to the vet, but I personally don't think a small amount of milk chocolate would kill her - if it was 70% dark chocolate stuff then it would be a totally different story.

    Hope all goes well.

If they haven't have any real signs by now I wouldn't worry too much about it. One threw up, which is what the vet would probably have done. Too be on the safe side I would call the vet in the morning and get a professional opinion. I really don't think it is too serious though. The dark chocolate or bakers chocolate is the stuff that is the worst and from the sounds of it there is a lot other stuff besides just chocolate, so they probably didn't get a whole lot of chocolate any way.

While chocolate is toxic to dogs and some other pets, the amount that it sounds like your dogs may have consumed is not normally fatal.

I would, however, like to add that I witnessed, firsthand, the death of a sheltie that ate only a few blocks off of a hershey bar. Unfortunately, while they have developed mathematical formulas to determine the amounts of chocolate that it would take to kill different animals, those formulas aren't always accurate!

In the future, be very careful with your chocolate! I have five rats that come running around my living room every night... I literally have to keep my candy (and other stuff) locked up!!!

well if she vomited it, hopefully that solves the problem.. and that she didn't digest much.

have your dog's behaviors changed at all? more hyper or anything?

cocoa is that part that is toxic to dogs, and milk chocolate doesn't have much in it.. but the sugar alone could cause some issues..

i'd take your dogs out to some grass and coax them to eat some. wait outside a bit cuz they will probably barf after a little while.

I wouldn't worry! Your dog has to ingest quite a bit of chocolate to feel any negative effects. It is the caffeine and bromethalin in chocolate that is poisonous to your dog. Dark baker's chocolate is most toxic to your dog since it contains a high amount of caffeine and bromethalin. Milk chocolate and white chocolate have lower amounts of caffeine. I just got that off a website called www.petlibrary.co.uk

Good luck with the dogs :)

you can also use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. 1 tsp per 10 lbs body weight.

you can add it to her drinking water if she is drinking.

Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.

To answer the question "How much is too much" is not simple. The health and age of your dog must be considered. Obviously if your dog is aged and not in top shape, his reaction to a plate of chocolate is going to be different from a young healthy dog of the same weight.

if it's a small amount they should be ok... ust keep an eye on them for a while, if she starts vomiting more or seizing you need to take her to an emergency vet... also, make sure they drink plenty of water, it will help flush the chocolate out of their systems.

They may be a little bit hyper, have a little diarrhea, and as you know, vomit, but that much chocolate wont cause serious problems.

2 oz prob shouldnt have affected them badly enough to kill them i dont think u have to worry but yea they might have a lil bit of stomach probs for a couple of days. if worsens, take to vet.
