Cover Letter Question?
What is the best first sentence to use when writing a cover letter. I am applying for a promotion with my current company. I hate to open with "I am writing regarding the xyz position..", I'd prefer something a little more unique and something that draws the letter reader in. What have you used in your letter?
For managers, what is the most appealing opening to a cover letter (especially if it was someone applying for a promotion)?

Umm....I wouldn't go for the "Let me help you do that with your business" because it sounds like "your way of doing things up to now sucked, I'm better than you, I'm coming to save you". Someone once told me that, instead of looking for a generic position, one of the best things you can do is describe a job you're looking for....
For example, instead of saying, "I'm looking for a PR position with your company" You might instead specify: "I'm seeking a career that challenges my abilities, and allows me to use my customer service skills on a daily basis."
Using the job description as points that you're looking for in a job looks much more positive, and shows that you've done your research.
Using the word 'career' instead of 'position' indicates that you'd be more inclined to a long-term position within the company.
