Muslims, is it true? Are we doing the wrong thing here? Is Yahoo! Q/A Haram? Are we committing sins?
I know its weird to hear that Yahoo! Q/A are Haram. I myself disagree with this.
All of this started over when I was chatting(Halal chat) in an Islamic website. Many well-known scholars visit that site and answer questions online by chatiing for eg. Bilal Philips, Yusuf Estes etc.
I logged in to that website and entered a room where there were 10 other people online and a Dawah team's head. I asked everyone there if they were using Yahoo! Question and Answers. Then the Dawah team's head said to me that Yahoo! is Haram. Let me show you a brief dialogue between us.
Me: Hey, I am a regular user of Yahoo! Answers. It can't be Haram. There are many Muslims there who answer the questions in a peaceful wauy.
Team's Head: Its Haram because its a place where there is a mixture of truth and falsehood. People can say whatever they want and talk garbage about Islam.
Me: But there are many other people who clear the misconception of non-Muslims.
Team's Head: Yusuf Estes says that it is Muslims wh
o promote the site of non-Muslims and you are doing the same thing.
Me: Well, I won't leave Yahoo. I will continue spreading Peace~!
Team's Head: You will never understand. My job was to answer you. I did that. I told you its a place ruled by non-Muslims and you, along with your fellow Muslims, are promoting their site. If the Muslims or non-Muslims want to ask questions about Islam, then why don't they visit us? Why do we have to go to their site?
Me: You made me really sad by saying this. It's our duty to spread Islam!
(The Dawah team's head kicks me out of the room and bans me, saying, "You will never understand"
I was kicked out for disagreeing with him:(
I know it sounds stupid and weird. I am really sad and don't want to leave Yahoo! Not because Only I like it, but I also find friends here:(
Hey seruni
YOU ARE NOT GARBAGE!
NEVER SAY THAT AGAIN OR I WILL LEAVE AND WILL COMPLAIN TO ALL OF THE MUSLIMS
:(
The LINKS WORK!
YAY!!!!
@ Avenny
I know its not Haram. That Dawah man knew nothing about Islam~!
Alhamdulillah
I have got a lot of opinions and answers. I am unsure which one to select as the best answer as there are so many people! I will leave this up to you. You can select the best answer! By the way, I was allowed to re-enter that website. That Dawah teams head is the only bad person. The site's administrator are very very helpful and peace-loving. They really talked to me calmly, unlike that 'Team's head'
Again, I am confused which one to select as the best answer. Thankyou all for your answers!
Jazakallah Khair

Using the word "Haram" is a bit harsh...maybe he should have used "discouraged" or something else instead as the word Haram automatically makes us think STOP STOP YOU'RE WRONG, YOU'RE GOING TO HELL... People label a lot of things Haram when they shouldn't, especially when there's NO proof from the Qur'an / Hadith / Shari'ah to justify it.
I'm just an observer here in this section, so I don't agree that it's actually "Haram" but I wouldn't know if it's Halal either. I just wanted to say I don't think the brother should have said Haram.
Another thing I've always been taught is that when someone asks you about a certain thing whether its Haram or not, you shouldn't immediately condemn it and classify it as Haram, but rather explain it to the person in the light of the Qur'an and Hadith first and conclude how those relevant Ayahs and Ahadith show the thing is Haram. So maybe the brother could have explained the "pros and cons" of Yahoo! first and then said it was "Haram"/"discouraged". It's just a thought, but sorry to hear you were kicked out.

I do not believe it is haram..... we are trying to educate people here and take away misconceptions about Islam.
How ever, i can also understand why the would say that. There are some sections here in Y!A that go very far in the way questions are posed. Than i also see the answers of some that make me shake my head in wonder, thinking: 'This is not what I have learned about Islam' Answers like: 'Allah says al the disbelievers burn in hell, so yes, christians too'.
This type of answers you see in the Religion and Spirituality section. They do give Islam a bad name.
But i think if we stay honest and answer to our best abilities things we are sure of and if needed with references to were we get our info, it will be fine.
But in the end, Allah knows best!

According to the concept of "Its Haram because its a place where there is a mixture of truth and falsehood. People can say whatever they want and talk garbage about Islam"; this means that any, and I mean any, place in the world is haram to go to if it's not a mosque. I can go out to a park and hear false ignorant comments about Islam, especially being a Muslim woman who wears the hijab. I can go to school, and hear false things about Islam. Would that be haram too?

Dear brother,
I wish I were there with you to tell the room head the following;
If he has a point that we, Muslims who go to y/a to support Islam and correct wrong concepts non-Muslims have about Islam, support also Yahoo website which, as claimed by him, is a haram-to-visit one, then let him ask himself how many of Arabs and Muslims use Internet for haram, illegal and bad intentions, all of us know such a thing and so, Muslims who use y/a for good intentions do a good thing for Islam not a bad one as he thought, they also increase the percentage of good use of Internet by Arabs and Muslims which is good for Islam and Muslims as a whole.
Secondly, unless we have a similar website where all ideas, thoughts and points of view are presented equally, we SHOULD go to such sites and present our own points of view and show what Islam really is.
And even if we have one, we still should go to other websites and prenest Islam as it really is.
Thirdly, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, remind that head that it was Muhamed, peace be upon him, who went to every tribe, whatever their religion is, to present Islam to them, and we do JUST THE SAME.

I have to agreed with majeed 32. As a non-Muslim who knew very little about Muslims, I would not want to go to a Muslim site because I thought all Muslims were bad. After being on Y!A I learned how misinformed I was and that the majority of Muslims are kind, loving people who are devoted to their religion and to God. Had it not been for Y!A I would not have learned this as quickly as I did. I also learned from Y!A how persecuted Muslims are because of these misconceptions. Obviously the site you visited would not be a very good one cuz it appears there is no tolerance if you disagree. For him to have kicked you out because you disagree with him was ridiculous and obviously he only wants to spread what he believes instead of being open minded to intellingent conversation.

Assalamu alaykun Really you commit sins but it not a big sin such as shirk sin because you just only having doubt of the existence of Allah while you do not pray to another power for example worship to Jesus who was only a messenger of Allah You have no convince about the existence of Allah because you want to meet Allah just like a person while Allah is not a person. You should strengthen your faith through believing the existence of Allah, angels, holy books, prophets and messengers of Allah, taqdir the final decision of Allah and the life after we all die as the 6 pillars of faith. You must read and understand its meanings of the whole Qur'an and hadith and perform prayer on time daily properly at least 5 btimes a day and make dzikir as remembering of Allah You must love Allah by obeying all of Allah's commands and prohibitions as stated in the Qur'an and explained in hadith. If you have a strong faith, shaytans could not disturb and whisper to you for making bad deeds. You should ask for Allah's forgiveness in a taubatan nasuha prayer at night, repent and promise to Allah that you would not do the similar mistakes in the future Isha Allah and alhamdulillah you are in the right path and Allah will always bless you Ameen

Well, this is one man's point of view,
And here is my opinion:
-pick the questions you answer carefully, of course it would be Haram to answer/encourage someone about going out on a date. However, you will have Ajr if you advice some girl to wear Abaya. So it depends on the question itself whether what you are doing is Halal or Haram.
-don't answer or discuss questions that insult Allah (Subhanhu Wa Taala), prophet Mohammed (PBUH), or Islam. Instead, report such questions. I tried it before, the question got deleted in a short while.
-as long as you don't hurt yourself or anyone, and you fullfill your prayers and duties. There is no reason to make this Haram. Islam encourages us to mix with people and to teach them about Islam and help them in life generally.

Hey that was wrong of him to kick you out. We're all doing something here. If this is Haram, and everyone (especially those with knowledge) leaves YA! then who's going to tell the truth about Islam? Who's going to defend Islam? Who's going to make others understand our ways?
And that Head talks about Da'wah.

Amongst Muslim Dawees there are Muslims with extreme views and there are very sensible Muslims also who would never say what you have experienced.
I am sure we all Muslims are gaining knowledge from each other and it is not haram if we have to face non-Muslims
using bad language. In response to my one question, in which I complained the way non-Muslims make comments on us, many Christians wrote that they find Muslims to be most honorable, civilized and good people. May of them may have learned about us right here on Yahoo. Answers.
We just need to avoid non-Muslims who make bad comments and not reply them back instead of taking it on to our hearts and feel bad about it. We are slowly changing minds of some of them. Many of them are learning Islam from us and atleast their views about Muslims are changing. So what if all not accept Islam. If we totally stop coming to Yahoo.Answers then they will be only reading lies from the Islam haters and their opinions about Muslims will be even worst..
Many of our sisters ask persoanl questions which can be done better on Yahoo and MSN Messenger programs without any non-Muslim making stupid comments on such questions.

salam alikom brother
there will always be ppl who like to say that everything is haram..as others said,i don't belive it's haram,it's just everything else,it can be halal,it can be haram, depending on the way u use it....
and alhamdulelah i think we have the best use of it,as we teach each other, and learn new things, even when we chat,it's like all muslims comming together sharing their problems and so...things that i can't do in real life with muslims in the US or the UK or India for example....
''People can say whatever they want and talk garbage about Islam'' ...so? ppl talk abut islam in a false way,everywhere..so it's our duty to tell them and inform them with the right thing, not to let them say whatever they like and not participate because ''it's haram''....
i like to use our heads and logic before we say anything is haram or halal(unless there's a clear verse or a hadith about it)
because nothing was said to be haram, unless there's a harm in it,and vice versa.....
of course Allah knows best, but also Allah knows everybody's intentions,he(subhanahu wa ta'ala)knows why we are here, and what's our duty...
