Girls', definitely. It's not masculine at all, it's the Spanish form of Carmel and the Latin word 'carmen' means song. Carmine, however, is the Italian masculine form of Carmel, which is influenced by the Latin carminis meaning 'of song.'

There's the opera, Carmen, and she's the lead character. Also, Carmen is a main character in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. It's a pretty name!

Don't kids yourselfs - there are a lot of italian men named Carmen out there, myself included. It was widely used Italian name for men especially 30 - 40 years ago. It's becoming mostly a female name now but I was named after my grandfather and his father as well was named Carmen. I know it's mostly used as a hispanic female name now but there are males name Carmen. The chicago cubs have a pitcher in there farm league named Carmen Pignatiello, also Carmen Policy was a long time GM in the nfl. Also there is a Carmen Defalco on ESPN. If you pay attention you will see the name used for males but I think the majority is female.

I grew up in school with a boy named Carmen so for a long time, I'd have said boy. But when we were in high school I was at his house and his mother had all these pictures of him before he started school with long beautiful curls and wearing frilly dresses. Apparently she wanted a girl when he was born and gave him that name. So, after that, I'd have to say GIRL!

Definitely a more girl's name. I've heard of a guy being named Carmen, but I found it confusing.
