If the push button on the wall works it's not the motor. Most door openers require a security code that needs to be re-set, usually through dip-switches. Best bet is buy a Genie remote that is compatible with your model #. If the motor is shot, and it could be after15-20 years, you must buy a new door opener, you can't just buy a motor without the operating mechanism as technology has changed.

Does your door work when you push the button on the wall???....if so...you don't need a new motor.

Not all Universal remotes work with every garage door opener. You will need to check the package t see if that one works with your unit...if not...check around for the right one. Usually the cheapest ones don't work...and that is what everyone tries to buy.

Some of the previous answers are very good. I just wanted to bring up that if your garage door has a sensor light, it may have been bumped and not aligned. If the light is out of alignment, the door will not open. It thinks that something is blocking the doorway.
