Recent trip to the Philippines, now I have questions.?

I really enjoyed the Philippines. I stayed for only a short two weeks to visit my husbands family, and being from New York I don't really think I truly understood what 'culture shock' meant until I came here. But there are some things I don't understand... Maybe someone can help?

1. My family owns like six dogs. Some of them are in cages some of them run free. Nobody is allowed to touch them and the only time I saw them eat was scraps that were left for them. Otherwise they paid no attention to them and they were not spayed or neutered. What's up with the dogs?

2. Shanty 'Villages' - WHY do the people who live in these little villages which always seem to located on water throw their garbage into the water? I saw a place that had SO much garbage piled up the people were literally WALKING on it like it was new ground! Isn't there a better way to dispose of the garbage?

3. Why isn't toilet paper provided in some places?? I thought Filipinos were very clean people?

Update:

As for #3 - I specifically meant in public restrooms where there is no bidet provided and obviously no sink in the stall with you. Then what??

I really found this q interesting, hence the star.

& even though l do not claim to know the answers to your questions, I will try to write what I think are the answers.

    1. Animals there are treated like they should be & like they do in many poor countries, they are treated as animals, for really they are. Although most of the rich Filipino families & some of the middle class treat their pets like they are part of their family, like a child or a sibling if you may, yes, just like they do in the US of A.

    2. There is a better way, it is just the government is so poorly managed they only concentrate garbage management in the real villages & subdivisions. Besides, shanty villages are normally illegally built & are not listed as legitimate, & the people who live their are normally so much like the people who live in Skidrow or in carboard boxes in alleys in any major city in the US, so what do you expect?

    3. Toilet paper, of course they use it there, the last person who used the public restroom before you loved it so much, she probably took it home with her. Next time you go there you have to use the facilities of five star hotels & high end restaurants or bring your own as many Filipinas do.

Lastly, if you think you have understood culture shock already, you really have to go to some other third world country where majority of the people do not speak english & do not share a believe in a God, or maybe in the God you believe in. Yes for I lived in Philippines many many years, but is still shocked at what is going on at other 3rd world countries.

    1. Taking care of dogs vary from different family/culture. I have a dog and we keep them inside the house. Our neighbor have them caged and fed table scraps. Maybe they didn't let you touch them because they were not given anti-rabies shots? Laws on taking care of pets are not that strongly enforced in the country that's why most dog-owners don't even bother giving their dogs shots or even taking care of them.

    2. The Philippines have a big garbage disposal problem. We live in a private compound and garbage were only collected once a week. People who live in shanty areas probably don't have their garbages collected.

    3. Filipinos are accustomed to using soap and water when washing after doing the deed. Some Filipinos think using toilet papers is not enough.

    1. dogs - yeah, some families here don't take as good care of their dogs as some others do. what you saw wasn't the rule: though it's common for people here to just keep dogs "as is" and feed them scraps, there are also people who treat their dogs like members of the family.

    2. shanties - we're a very poor country. these shanty villages exist basically because it's all that many filipinos can afford. as for the trash in the shanties: no money, no proper solid waste management.

    3. toilet paper - i know of someone who used to run a gasoline station which, naturally, had a public restroom. the problem with toilet papers in public restrooms is that people feel so entitled to it that they take the whole thing. so people who operate and maintain public restrooms end up replacing toilet paper with such unreasonable frequency that in the end it becomes too expensive and they just give up replacing the toilet paper altogether. if you want to go to a toilet with ample toilet paper, try a three- to five-star hotel.

Mich,I know why you are having this thoughts, women are more emotional, vain and maticulous that's why you were very obeseravant during your stay.

1.Taking care of dogs here are not the same maybe as to what you used to,more likely i guess they are only askal dogs[street dogs] which is normal to feed scraps foods, though I'm not saying it's bad to feed them the normal dog food. They don't allow you to touch it because the dogs are very sensitive on strangers and since you are new, your family is protecting you from any harm.

2.Lack of waste management here is one of the biggest problem, surely not only to your husband's place,so people get use to it and they don't bother much.Although it's bad for the health of those people. So mostly, people just maintain the cleanliness of their houses and careless about the street garbage coz they can't do anything to let others do the right way.

3.We are very sensitive about cleanliness but to provide toilet paper is an extra expenses [public toilet speaking]remember that poverty here is rampant so they would rather pay and prioritize paying the water bills which is more important than buying toilet papers which can be bought by users.I suggest you to bring your own everytime, to not have a problem in the future.

I hope this things make you understand more where your husband came from and value more the POSITIVE things you experienced being with his family during your stay.

With pets, i guess we treat them differently.

2-Housing + over population problem and also include the garbage disposal problem. there is no place for them to go, well actually they have a choice but they're hard headed that they rather stay in that place for them to rot. Waiting for someone to give them help. Which is kind of pathetic.

Toilet paper? We usually wash our *** with soap & water. In public toilets , if there were some someone will probably steal it.

    1. animals in the philippines are treated differently because first, they are not the expensive type of dogs thus they dont eat expensive food, second, they are usually for watching the house for burglars not as pets to cuddle.

    2. like what others said, government porblem - poor waste disposal method

    3. some restrooms provide tissue paper & some dont. you just have to bring your own. but if you want tissue papaer, there are restrooms that charges P10 per entry, they have tissue paper and the restroom is super clean. (PS some countries in europe dont have tissue paper in their public restrooms too and some charge a fee )

    1. dogs are not really treated very well the way you take care of them in the states. well, it varies from one family to another. in some familes, dogs are treated as a family member, in some, they are being killed and served as "pulutans."

    2. garbage problem.

    3. toilet paper? haha! it's a waste of money! u can use soap and water which is even cleaner!
