If New York had a closed primary, then how were 21% of the voters independent?
The same goes for all the other states. I thought closed primary meant independents can't vote at all.

Independents can indeed vote, albeit on other matters on the ballot. If however, they wish to vote in either party's primary then they could declare party affiliation. They are then no longer considered independent, although they may still consider themselves as such.
