How to stop Internet Explorer from opening links in new windows?
This just started today, and we haven't made any changes to the settings. Every time I click on a link, it opens the target in a new browser. It's really, really annoying and I can't find a setting to fix it!
I know the difference between a pop-up and a browser window. There are many links that yesterday opened in the same window which are now opening in new windows, hence the question.

I am not sure if this is it, but go to Tools, it is located near file, edit, view, etc. Scroll down to: Internet Options. From there click on the Advanced tab. Scroll down until you see "reuse windows for launching shortcuts" and check it.
This is the closest think I could find to fixing your problem. This is mainly for opening things from outlook, but it may be what you're looking for. Look around in this area for something else that might fix your problem that I did not see.
I would recommend doing a virus scan and defrag on your computer as well. These fix most problems.
In Internet Explorer, holding down the shift key while opening a link will open it in a new browser window. Make sure nothing is holding your shift keys down.
If these don't work you can possibly do a system restore, re-install Internet Explorer, or download firefox.

There isn't. What causes "new windows" is a setting on the web page your on. If you notice the links on question/answers themself's don't open a new window, but if you do a Internet search or click on an advertisement you get a "new" window.
Unless your talking about "Pop - ups" that were you get extra windows popping up when you navigate away. If that is the case then you need to install a Pop-up blocker. You can use check with your Internet provider to see if they offer one for free.
Hope this helps

depending which version you have the procedure is different but try this in IE8 Select tools from the menu, then internet options, on the general tab find 'change how webpages are displayed in tabs' then click on settings. Find: 'open links from other programs in:' uncheck new window and select 'A new tab in the current window' or 'the current tab or window' - whichever is your choice. I use the first Another way apart from changing your settings is to right click on a link and select 'open in new tab'

My computer went spastic a couple weeks ago, it was opening windows when I wasn't asking it to, Every time I moved my mouse a lot of files would open for what seemed to me to be no reason. If this is what yours is doing you may need to clean your mouse. That is what I did anyway. You will have to forgive me but I am computer illiterate and don't know what I am doing half the time!
Good luck!

For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/axOyy
Go to control panel and select Internet settings. Click the "settings" button on the section called "Tabs". There will be a box there to select whether pop-up and/or new pages open in new windows or not.
