ied external hard drive not working?

removed an old hard drive out of 98 computer. Tried to use as external hard drive. I can't get it to work. Seems like it is not seeing it connected to the computer. Lights are on and the thing is connected ok. I am using a windows xp as my tower and am at a loss as to what to do to even see the drive. Do I need to do something to my XP? I only want to remove old photos then send back to Seagate for a warranty issue. Thanks for any ideas.

How do I get this to work?

Update:

Sorry IDE HDD 3.5

Make sure you've set all the jumpers on the back of the hard disk correctly, if you want to transfer photos off another hard drive onto your main one, set it as slave then dependant on where its an IDE or SATA, plug it all in accordingly. Usually an IDE cable will have master and slave connections written on the cable itself, aiding you. If you are unsure what the jumpers are, you should see on the back 8 pins in 4 rows of 2 each. on one of them there should be a little plastic ring or something similar either take it off or put one on the correct pin, usually it will say on the on the hard drives label where things have to be to be set in the correct mode.

    Good Luck.
