Personal property question?

Can I legally write a letter to our former roommates/previous owners (of our house) and his mother giving them a 2 day notice to come get the rest of their items out of our shed? We have already asked them 3 times, in 2 weeks, when are they going to get their stuff out of the shed and they say a day, but never come get it. We would like to use our shed as some of our things are under a carport on the side of the house.

Send a certified mail letter with a return receipt signature required (to prove date and time received and by whom). Wait 10 days and then you can dispose of it. Your state may have a web site where the laws are posted. If not, go to your local library and ask the librarian for assistance in finding the law that affects your state. I am familiar with some laws in certain states so check with your laws to be sure. You do not want to be sued for disposing of property that is not yours.

Check to see how much time is required in your area to declare property abandoned. Then send them a certified, return receipt, letter telling them they have that much time to get their stuff or you will considered it abandoned according to state/county/city (whatever) law. If they don't come pick up their stuff then the day after the deadline you can toss their stuff. Do not toss it before!
