Do snakes kill/eat chooks as well as eat the eggs?
My husband wants to put normal fencing wire around the outside of the chook pen that we are building. I want him to use either very fine chicken wire or mesh because of the snakes. He says that snakes will not kill chooks but will eat the odd egg! We live in the country and are surrounded by bush and have a lot of green and brown snakes. Can anyone advise the best materials to use for the outside of the chook pen/house?

Unless it's a big snake, I doubt it could eat a whole chook.
I wouldn't see why a snake would pointlessly attack a chicken without eating it. Snakes don't like wasting venom (what i heard)
I think your husband is right!
p.s snakes eat chickens whole right!? So if it eats the chicken it will be in its belly for a while, so the snake wouldn't be able to get back out of the coop heh.

A large snake would eat a chook. Most venomous snakes would be too small, but something like a scrub python or a large coastal carpet python would get one down. Not sure where you live though, so I'm not sure what would likely be around your area.
One way to find out I guess, would be to leave the coop open and if any get eaten, you know you need to make a covered coop for the chooks.
