A question on the speed of light?

If you are travelling in a car at 50mph and you fire a gun at 500mph then the bullet reaches its target at 550mph. If you turn on a torch when in a car travelling at 50mph, what speed would light travel at and why?

    It would still travel at the speed of light because that can not be exceded.

    The speed of light is a constant, and does not obey Newtonian laws.

    The bullet would NOT reach its target at 550mph. It would leave the barrel at that speed, but would immediately start to decelerate due to the friction caused as it passed through the atmosphere. It this were not so, all firearms would have an infinite range.

    This IS confusing Jim. The theory of relativity states that light will always travel at the same speed, no matter what speed the source or the observer is traveling. So if you were traveling at 50mph, light would pass a stationary observer at the speed of light ( about 300,000,000 meters per second), and not 50 mph faster than that.

    This is the correct speed of light. 3x10^8m/s. NOT 300,000m/s as others have stated and given me thumbs down for. The idiots.

    The beam of light will travel at about 3x10^8 meters per second, the speed of light. You are not exerting any force on the beam of light (because it's just light) through the acceleration of the car, so you will not affect it's speed. You will however "compress" the waves slightly. On a huge scale you would be able to notice the effect of this "compression" through the light turning slightly blue. This is known as blueshift, or redshift when you "stretch" the light.

    Also the speed of light is not constant, it varies according to the medium it is passing through, it's only 3x10^8m/s in a vacuum, and in some substances, such as Bose-Einstein condensate, travels slow enough to observe (17m/s in this case).

    Relativity goes by the principle that the laws of physics must be the same in every reference plane, i.e. the speed of light when you are standing still (300,000 km/s) is the same speed you see when you are traveling 50 mph. When your reference frame is moving a time dialation occurs meaning relative time in your frame slows down so that the speed of light remains 300,000 km/s.

    Most individuals are accustomed to the addition rule of velocities: if two cars approach each other from opposite directions, each traveling at a speed of 50 km/h, relative to the road surface, one expects that each car will perceive the other as approaching at a combined speed of 50 + 50 = 100 km/h to a very high degree of accuracy.

    However, at velocities at or approaching the speed of light, this rule does not apply. Two spaceships approaching each other, each traveling at 90% the speed of light relative to some third observer between them, do not perceive each other as approaching at 90% + 90% = 180% the speed of light; instead they each perceive the other as approaching at slightly less than 99.5% the speed of light.

    light will travel at 300000 km/sec irrelevant of the speed of the object which creates light, this is a fundamental law of the theory of relativity. that speed changes slightly when light moves in matter and not in empty space. light is also affected by gravity.

    an observer that sees the light of the torch coming at him or going away will see a slight change of color (shift)

    Light is a type of radiation. You cant apply newton laws of motion here.

    But whereas in your first example you considered a bullet which has mass. Here you can apply the concept of relativity.

    They are correct that the speed of light would not change, however the frequency of the light would be shifted slightly due to the velocity of the source.

    The light would still travel at approx 186 000 miles per second. (the speed of light.)

    The speed of light is constant and so can not be changed whether you are moving or not.
