Can anyone tell me why i step on my brakes and the car shuts off? Or in cold weather the car runs off the battery untill it dies and then the alt kicks in and everything gets normal

Update:

When its cold out, the car runs on half power, everything is dim and when it finally warms up the power comes on fully.

Also the car shuts off now when you step on the break this started yesterday but the half power started a while ago. Also the car is parked when it shuts off so no movement just step on the break and it shuts off.

    Loose battery cables... betcha!

Inertia from the battery's weight... you hit the brakes, it jars, and the cables wiggle... if they're loose, and corroded... your car's ECU looses it's power supply, and shuts down. Next after that, the cables finally settle, and poof... she runs again. It would also explain the the break in the alternators charging circuit.

May very well be something else, but it certainly is a loose connection somewhere, but I'd bet it's the battery connections.

    Yes... I agree.

Check the Battery for loose or corroded terminals. Also if it is a add water type, check for water being low in the cells. Don't add tap water, use distilled water. Add water to the fill lines in the cells. The cell plates should be covered with water. Do not over-fill. The water line is (not) fill to the max.

You could have a bad alternator but I suspect dirty or loose connections. After all this, you may end up replacing the battery. This kind of constant discharging is very hard on a battery.

Batteries do have acid in them and they can explode if a spark occurs and they happen to be gassing. Always remove the negative connection first to avoid a spark that could cause an explosion.

When re-connecting, connect the negative last. This too will avoid sparks.

Baking soda and water mixed is very good for cleaning battery terminals.

Wear eye protection.... just in case.

Hope it works out for you.
