nick names?

1. I have heard that people with the surname 'Smith' are sometimes called 'smudger'. Is there a reason for this?

2. 'Dick' - how do you get that from the name Richard?

3. Did you, or do you have a nick name? what is it?

    1. Last names often originate from the persons occupation. Someone who was a blacksmith could have taken the name Smith. Because of working as a blacksmith, they would be dirty with coal smudges from working with the metal in the furnace; therefore, Smudger.

    2. It is a break down of the name: Richard -> Rick -> Dick. (No better explanation that I know of).

    3. I don't have a nick name that I know of.
