Pretty much anything is fine, but don't lift more than you can lift. Start out with a weight you can lift reasonably confidently, then gradually work up to a weight you can lift maybe 20-24 times with only a little fatigue. Using that as your baseline, take a day off, then come back not on the next visit, but the visit after that, and try to either up the reps or the weight, but not both. If it works, try to keep that up on the odd visits, taking the even visits off and doing cardio instead.

Gradually you'll find that you can do more reps with heavier weights.

By the way, if you are in bad physical condition, a mile in 25 minutes is probably OK, but if you are in good health, that isn't much more than a warm-up. Try to up your time or your speed on the cardio.

If you're uncertain about the level of exertion, get a heart rate monitor (chest strap and watch).

I own a gym with my husband. If you can afford a trainer by all means pay for a few sessions, they can personalise a workout for you and give you the proper building blocks.Every 3 months buy some more sessions to change your workouts to reflect your progress. Also you need at least 30 minutes of cardio in your target heart rate for cardiovascular health, more for weight loss. Abs are a small muscle group you could do them every other day if you wanted to. If you attend the gym 4 times a week or every other day you can do one of 2 things. The first being a full body workout each time you go, light weight lots of reps 20-25, moving quickly through each exercise. OR you can break your workouts into major muscle groups: Legs one day, Chest and Back another, Shoulders and Arms day 3 and on day 4 1 hour of cardio and do your abs that day.
