First of all dyskaryosis is not cancer, nor is it harmful in its own right. It refers to some mild changes in the appearance of the cells, which normally cover the surface of the cervix (the neck of the womb).
These changes are often noticed on the smears and it is well known that these cellular changes usually revert back to normal within a few weeks or months.
In fact 90 per cent of dyskaryotic cells revert to normal, although 10 per cent can progress to become more abnormal and a small percentage of these can progress over the course of years to become malignant.
This takes considerable time and the chances are that your smear results will be totally normal next time anyway.
The great thing about smears is that now some early changes in the cells have been found, you can have more frequent smears and monitor future events.
Screening detects any abnormal changes and allows doctors to treat cells early before cancer ever ensues. It is likely that you will be invited to have an earlier test than usual, say in three to six months time, but you will need to check this with your GP in accordance with local health screening policy.
best wishes and good luck.
