Paralysis: this occurs after waking up or shortly before falling asleep. the person cannot move any body part, cannot speak, and only has minimal control over blinking and breathing. This paralysis is the same paralysis that occurs when dreaming. The brain paralyzes the muscles to prevent possible injury during dreams, as some body parts may move during dreaming. If the person wakes up suddenly, the brain may still think that it is dreaming, and sustains the paralysis.

Hallucinations: Images or speaking that appear during the paralysis. The person may think that someone is standing beside them or they may hear strange sounds. These may be dreamlike, possibly causing the person to think that they are still dreaming. Often times it is reported as feeling a weight on one's chest, as if being underneath a person or heavy object.

These symptoms can last from mere seconds to several minutes and can be frightening to the person.

Fret not! You're not alone. This is, like what previous posters have mentioned, sleep paralysis. It normally happens when you're especially tired, or when your regular sleep patterns are disrupted. It could even happen after you take a certain type of medication (i.e. Painkillers, Sleeping Meds).

I started getting attacks after taking meds for my wisdom tooth extraction. I thought I was possessed or something! :P It's actually when your mind wakes up, but your body's still asleep, so you're sorta stuck. The symptoms I get when I'm about to have an attack are cold flushes and ringing in the ears. And then, BAM! it happens. And although the dreams can be really freaky, it's relatively harmless. Just focus ALL your energy on moving a small bodypart.. like a finger or toe. Just push with all your might, and when your finger moves, your body'll quickly break out of it!

It's what the previous poster said - sleep paralysis. When you dream your brain does this to keep you from flailing around performing the actions in your dreams, or sleepwalking. Sometimes you wake up while you're in that stage of sleep, and it takes a few seconds to get your brain and muscles talking to each other again. It's a very long few seconds! I get this now and then, and knowing what it isn't doesn't stop me from trying to force myself to move, so it's not the most pleasant sensation.

well...I do dream when I sleep but I don't think I have ever taken comfort from thinking about someone special being there for/with me while I'm sleeping! (I will now though it's a very nice thought)

That is sleep paralysis. You woke up and your brain still thinks you are sleeping so images pop up and you can't move since your brain isn't using the nerves to send signals. You woke up since it ended. I had it twice so far.
