Well, boys tend to learn to speak better...girls can be more aggressive...and males tend to be more colorful...brighter colors.

Definitely get a male.
Males are far more interactive, more vocal, easier to tame, and bond easier.
In the bird world, males do all of the work, singing and dancing to impress a potential mate, while the females just watch.
I've had many adorable hens, who were incredibly sweet. One talked, and whistled tunes. Sadly, she died after surgery to remove a bound egg.
Females can and will lay eggs without a male. Their daylight hours must be reduced to "winter" hours to prevent excessive egg-laying and the risk of related complications.
I have many tiels. All of the males are very friendly, vocal, and animated, most of the females are not. The hens are generally shy, quiet and reserved - but sweet.
I recommend a male.
The only problem you may encounter, is if you want a young bird. Cockatiels cannot be visually sexed until they are about 9 months old, and have their adult feathers. Until that point, the only sure way to determine sex is through DNA testing.
However, if the youngster is whistling, and cat-calling, trying to talk, or making bizarre vocalizations...it's probably a male (99%).

If you want a Cockatiel, I would buy a male.I used to have a girl cockatiel and she didn't mate, and she still layed eggs. She had to have surgery and sadly she died. Now I have a boy cockatiel and he is easy to take care of. You should only buy a girl and a boy cockatiel if you are an experienced breeder. So my choice would be a male.

Most species of birds need to be sexed by a vet, though some have feather patterns that can help you determine which is which. Usually an oranger face is a male for example.
The male birds usually do more talking, singing as this is how they attract a female to mate with.
Also, some females have been known to lay eggs constantly, and according to my vet, short of surgery to get her fixed, there is not much that can be done.
That said, every bird will have it's own personality. I don't look for a male or female pet, I look for a healthy one with a good temperment and personality and buy that one.

Males will learn things faster which can be good and bad depending on how you look at it. Females are more protective. It's kind of the opposite of humans. If your are planning on getting more in the future get a female first cuz males don't like to share so they take longer to adjust.

FEMALE, because of the better temperament, also she will be more talkative IF there isn't a male w/her, because he will dominate.

males can learn to talk, but are usually the more agressive of the two......... it really depends on the bird, and how much time you devote to it
