In the late 1960's , as part of Lyndon Johnson's administration to reach out to the black minority of our society, the Census Bureau's regulation was amended to list mixed race of white and black ancestry as black. Therefore helping to increase the black population count in our country where the ratio of white population outnumber the blacks by a wide margin.

If you list yourself as having a minimum of 10% black ancestry, the Census Bureau Survey would count you as black American.

They have no choice. Others each choose how they consider the person based on appearance. A half black and half white person will almost always look just black. There are black people who were totally shocked to find out they are actually some 1/3 white through genetics testing. Most black americans are mixed.

The one-drop rule is an historical colloquial term in the United States that holds that a person with any trace of sub-Saharan ancestry (however small or invisible) cannot be considered white and so unless the person has an alternative non-white ancestry that he or she can claim, such as Native American, Asian, Arab, Australian aboriginal, the person must be considered black.

"You see, unfortunately, I am not black. There are lots of different kinds of blood in our family. But here in the United States, the word '*****' is used to mean anyone who has any ***** blood at all in his veins. In Africa, the word is more pure. It means all *****, therefore black. I am brown."

I think society chooses for you no matter what you want to call yourself. If there is one hint of something with the so called white people single that blood line out to identify you with and the mixed people themselves do the same for themselves. My daughter has several mixes of white in her but she has red curly hair and everyone thinks of her as Irish and it is a small part of her!

I have no idea which I would choose. I guess the race of whichever parent I liked best.

Why in the world would any AA person want to go by the "one drop rule" or any other racist rule? Those rules don't apply now.

I would choose to be white, you get more benefits in society from being white than being black. Just the reality of it all.

I would choose to be considered human.

People do not "choose" one or the other. There was a US law during the decades of slavery that stated something like if you had two grandparents that were of African decent, you were classified as a "*****" that could be bought and sold.

Typically people today simply go by their features. During the "Jim Crow" laws of segregation, "whites only" laws were enforced via appearance. These included rest rooms, water fountains, restaurants, schools and so forth.
