Wisdom Teeth -- Dry Socket or Normal Pain?
I had 2 wisdom teeth removed on Thursday. It is now Sunday, and the area near the lower tooth removal site is painful. Kind of a throbbing pain. This started on Saturday. The pain similar to when you bite into ice cream. The area is also sensitive to cold water.
Is this normal pain or dry socket? The pain isn't so bad where it keeps me awake at night, and normal tylenol helps some.

Here are the symptoms of dry socket:
Dry socket is a condition that sometimes occurs after a tooth extraction. It has several tell-tale signs and symptoms, including:
* Partial or total loss of the blood clot at the extraction site, which you may notice as an empty-looking (dry) socket
* Visible bone in the socket
* Pain that increases between one and three days after tooth extraction and that typically becomes severe and unrelenting
* Pain that radiates from the socket to your ear or eye on the same side of your face
* Bad breath or a foul odor coming from your mouth
* Unpleasant taste in your mouth
* Swollen lymph nodes around your jaw or neck
The site says if it's dry socket the pain will go away with treatment so give your oral surgeon a call if the symptoms describe what you're experiencing.
Good luck. I hope the pain passes quickly for you.

sounds like normal pain to me, if it was dry socket youd be in TERRIBLE TERRIBLE pain.
If tylenol helps you , then its probably just normal pain..
here are some signs and symptoms of dry socket..
Dry socket signs and symptoms ...
The pain associated with a dry socket can be moderate to severe in intensity and often has a throbbing component. The pain can be just localized to the extraction site or it may radiate from the extraction site to the patient's ear or eye (on the same side of their face). Additionally, the dental patient may notice a foul odor or taste emanating from the tooth socket. Upon visual inspection (when possible) the tooth socket will appear to be empty (minimal or no blood clot or granulation tissue present) and when looking down into the socket exposed bone is visible. The term "dry socket" is derived from this empty socket appearance. The lymph nodes in the patient's jaw or neck may become enlarged.

When I had my wisdom teeth out I was worried about dry socket also. My mom got dry socket years ago when she had hers out. She told me that dry socket hurts so bad you don't need to ask if it's dry socket. She said her whole head was throbbing starting where her tooth was, in the worst pain and nothing relieved it. She said to just remember that if you're asking if it's dry socket it's not. You will KNOW if you get dry socket and you won't have to ask.

Call the oral surgeon to have them check the area.. if it is dry socket they will have a paste to insert into the extraction site.. in the mean time do not drink anything out of a straw or suck anything.. including smoking.. these are all causes of dry socket.

Hi Its pretty normal, just keep rinsing with warm salty water and keep up the pain relief. Take care

Don't hesitate-- call your dentist or oral surgeon...whoever did the extraction, and ask. Are you taking the antibiotics prescribed to avoid infection? Also, is the area clean? Is it possible you got something lodged in there? Try rinsing with warm salt water or Listerine.

Oh, I've been there. Get back to the Dentist and have him or her redo the area. Also ask for a prescription pain killer, like vicodin. Takes the pain away entirely.
