The different military branches?

I am considering joining the military. I am still in high school but I really want to do ROTC somewhere and then hopefully HPSP. Anyway, my dad was in the Marine Corps for 21 years, and I said something about joining, and he said he wouldn't let me join the Army, but was fine with me joining the Navy, Marines, or AF. Do you think that's just his Marine bias? I have also heard other people advising against joining the Army, but not the other branches. Why do you think that is?

Update:

I love it when Brits try to talk ****.

Fredelles (sp?) is kinda right about the Royal Marines wiping the floor with the USMC. The Royal Marines are a commando unit, while the USMC is a rapid-reaction -force.

Don't let your father decide for you, one thing that marines are good at is spewing out crap about how **** the army is. What do you want to do? Army in my opinion offers more oppurtunities such as airborne school, SF and act in more versatile roles.

I agree with tool. I've met alot of guys that have switched from Marines to Army in the Infantry and they all say the same thing. Its just not that much different. Except you don't spend time on ships in the Army but the deployments are longer. Better gear and more money for bullets to train in the Army. The Marines have the PR machine and the best uniforms. If you want to find esprit de corp you can easily find it in the Army. The Army is so big anyone can find what they want. The other services have limited roles.

The only Marines that I've heard talk **** about the Army are the ones that have never worked with Regular Army Combat Units. Most Marines only work with Army Reserve and support units since the Marines don't have much of a logistical support system because they are a expeditionary force. They make there judgements off these soldiers because they are never around Army combat arms units.

Well I spent time in the Marines and I loved it, then I got out and spent along time in the Army and I made the decision that Marines weren't all that great. They claim to do alot, however, if you really do research you find out they are just Navy and Army bitches. They get hand me downs from the Army. They Army is the reason we are America and not a part of Briton, Germany, Vietnam, Iraq, Korea, Russia ETC. The Marines fought a very small amount of the battles but did as well as the Army did. I say make your own decision all services serve the flag, but the Army stands out among them all as the senior service who led the way through every war thus far with the Marines begging for the Media in the smaller battles. And if you don't believe me go to any Army unit and you will find a big amount of them used to be Marines, and they will all say "I like the Marines better" but yet they are in the Army and will retire from the Army.

For years different branches of the military have had their share of opinions. Your branch of choice, my opinion, should be determined by your interests in employment and your qualifications to secure training you desire. A career in the military can be very rewarding and your goals and determination to excell is your choice.

I have known many from all military branches, officers/enlisted. My personal/business associations find all intelligent, positive, desire to exceed, and whether active duty or now a civilian were honored to have served our nation.

Their execution to duty, learning, associating with the "right" personnel within their military units maintained positive direction.

I have always heard if you cannot get into your service of choice for whatever reason, the Army will take you. It is unfortunate for anyone to determine a military branch on grounds of race or other factors, and I do not have personal knowledge of this, but recently I had a young man inquiring my knowledge of percentages on this issue.

Initial requirements to enlist may be more difficult for some branches. For many years I know the Air Force testing scores required higher marks than others followed by Navy, Marines, Army. Applications for school after "boot" were also categorized in the same order.

You may visit recruiters and research your interests. If the Army offers military employment desired talk to your dad and find his true concerns that may be only his opinions not based on facts. Remember, Marines are the "ultimate" of the services in many ways and the dedication to duty your dad experienced and expresses is normal. His opinion is just that, his opinion, but he is still your dad.

Do your research, stay positive, reach for your goals, dreams, desires and become a productive person in life.

Once you have graduated from high school and are age 18 and over, your Father will not be able to prevent you from joining any military service. He may not like your choice and you can certainly follow his advice. However, if you want to join the army, he can't stop you.

My opinion... join the army. I am biased though, as I am both an Army Wife and an Army Mom. Hooah!
