Can people alter their bank accounts via computers?

Can someone hack into a banks computer and add like 100K or whatever to their account with no one knowing? What kind of safe-guards do they have against this?

I dont want to do this myself, but got curious after watching Live free or Die hard.

There's always the possibility; but as hacking techniques continue to grow, so has the security. Most banks still use the old-fashion user-password but now with added features (like SiteKey which require users to answer their own questions, and identifying their pictures, etc.). Encryption is also a powerful asset in safe-guarding your bank account to prevent hackers from seeing your information.
