I think it's a politeness issue combined with a mea cupla when young.
Almost everyone I've talked to at one point when they were young (counting here as anything under 30) and come up to a friend or acquaintance who was looking really down about something and said "What, did someone DIE or something?"
To find out that someone had indeed died.

Because death is not natural for mankind. We were created with the desire to live forever.
So some find more comfort in the idea of an after life instead of excepting the bible truths and realize that when You die, you are unconscious. Ecclesiastes 3:19, 20; 9:5, 6; Genesis 2:16, 17; Romans 5:12-21 just to name a few.

The recognition of what pain and suffering is shared in the death of a loved one. The words are spoken in ways of softness: in passing judgement upon you, nobody has told you should pass away, but to Drop Dead. Bleed Lots, then Die! is never replaced with, "Leak a bit, then expire".
These soft, kinder words are never much spoken in anger or insult, so they work well in sad times when sharing the moment of grief with love. Thus, it is not fear but compassion which brings forth these awkward words and phrases.

I think men talk glibly about death until they are confronted with the stark reality of it.
Death is monstrous and brutal, relentless and unstoppable.
If everything about this life just ends with your dried out husk rotting in the earth, what a cruel joke nature has played on all of us.
When you lose a loved one, only the hope of a future reuniting can bring comfort to the soul.

I believe it's because the word "die" infers that the spirit within a person dies also, and the Bible tells us that the spirit returns to the Lord who gave it. I know when my parents died, I would just think of them as having "passed away", having returned to the Lord. God bless you!!!

Not everyone believes we actually die. I have no fear of the word though I often use the term "crossed over" because that is what I believe happens.

death is final and some have a hard time dealing with the hereafter. Let's face it if you don't have Jesus when you die the game is over forever. It's weeping and gnashing in total darkness forever. Jesus is the Light!

Because no one knows what happens next, we can't cope with the fear that it could just be done and over nothing on the other side.
