My Whirlpool Duet Washer smells, does anyone know what the problem is?

Everytime we put in a load the washer puts out an odor that smells like someone passed gas. We're not sure what the problem is.

Update:

Thank you all so much for the tips they all sound great. I hate that I have to only pick one.

Take some bleach 1/2 bottle and pour it in tube and put the washer on heavy duty hot/hot mode. Do extra rise for cleaning too. Let that run until it's stops then open and smell. It should be gone now. If not repeat and use the rest of the bottle into the washer.

Just heard this on Fox the other day - the seal around the door apparently stays moist and will get "gunky" and start to smell. I think both Lowe's and Home Depot carry somethng to clean it with - either something you clean it with directly or run through a cycle in the washer. Hope this helps!

Check with your Whirlpool dealer. They make a product to clean the front loader washers. Keep the door open slightly when not in use.

Are you sure it is not coming from the drain pipe that the washer drain hose goes into? This goes directly to the sewer and you could be getting the odor coming up through the pipe. If it is coming from there, try sealing it with some duct tape.

put some baking soda or vinger in it and run it. Also, wipe down the inside parts that the water doesn't reach.

the problem has to be soap related. try changing the type of soap you are using. is the agitator turning?
