it says your body is a temple (as others mentioned) but the way i interpret that is not in regards to makeup or jewelry... i think this warns against drug and alcohol use (it it's full context)

it also says women should not be concerned with outward adornment so much, or they become fixated on appearances and vain, and vanity is a sin.

it says everything in moderation... a little makeup is not a sin. but if you spend your rent and grocery money on makeup (there are people who do this!) and are more concerned with what's on the outside than the inside, you have a problem.

Here, we see at least married women should not make use of such things. (1Pe 3:1-4)

One could *deduce* that, logically, unmarried women are included in this restriction, but that is a matter for the reader.

The NASB inexplicably inserts the word "merely", which I could find in none of the other translations. I was interested (because the NASB has such a good reputation as being both literal and accurate)

    http://www.studybibleforum.com/htm_php.php3?do=sho...

We see here that, in fact, the NASB *does* add the word "merely" (identified as an addition by the italics). My respect for the NASB has just dropped tremendously (even though they *did* signify it as an addition, it is not so indicated at biblegateway, for just one example).

Makeup is mentioned in the Old Testament, normally in relation to prostitutes and other women of low moral character. However, there is no indication I could find that it was forbidden, and (of course) prostitutes are *still* associated with the (over)use of makeup. Also, there are cases in the OT of women *owning* jewelry (normally, given as part of a dowry or bride price or similar payment). Perhaps this is why the NASB cavalierly inserts "merely".

The link I gave seems pretty comprehensive, mentioning not only jewelry but outer adornment in general. I think that, at the least, we can say that restraint is required.

Well, in the book of esther it talks about her being prepared with oils and other "cosmetics" of the time, so the bible isn't against makeup. I think it's a matter of why you use it, how much you use, etc. You should take care of yourself and care about how you look, but not to the point of vanity.

About the above "your body is a temple", I think she's right. It's not talking about makeup because makeup isn't permeneant. It's talking more about tattoos.

it actually does say in the section of your body is a temple and what not that you should not mark on your body, I dont think that is talking about makeup, and makeup did exsist then! it was just different,

I think its more headed towards tattoos and piercings, im still getting a tattootho! you gotta live!
