Can you tell me whether I can capture the spirit of New York in 3 days?
I am visiting New York in mid April for a long weekend, want to shop & sight see. Where are the best bargains with regards to hotels, clothes shopping & eating out?
Would love to hear from locals with hints that guide books don't cover :)

times sqaure is a must and it has everything from broadway shows (wicked, avenue q, and hairspray are my top favs), and then you can always hit up the wax museum which is right there, stop in somewhere for dinner (thalias, dave & busters, or even butter - super trendy spot + celeb hangout)
hit up central park, go to the zoo, walk around 5th ave. 9they have an ice skating rink as well)
as for shopping, i would recommend the soho area....you have everything from designer boutiques on prince and spring sts. to the popular H&m, club monaco, gap, etc. on broadway....
at night hit up the lounges and clubs, many places have live performances and famous djs (buddha bar, black fat ***** cat, the marquee, pink elephant, etc)
wanna visit the empire state building? go for it, then you can do some shopping in macys
as for the statue of liberty? you might wanna jus look at it from afar. lines are huge!!!!
museums : the Met, MOMA, the guggenheim....
(some hot spots to eat: STK, Butter, Pastis, BLT, Mr. Chows etc,)
(on the more budget friendly side is: Spice, Highline, Mesa Grill etc.)
you can look up all the places i mentioned on citysearch.com

Hm. Three days. Well, first of all, walk around Manhattan, it really isn't that big. Take in the stores, the museums, Central Park, the Bowery, Christopher Street (when I am in New York, my son and I eat there), get the ferry to Staten Island, see the Statue of Liberty, eat in Bleeker Street, get a cheap hotel room just the safe side of Harlem, go to Bloomingdales, use the subway near Times Square in the early hours of the morning because they have some great entertainers there and you can just get a drink and dance, if I were you I would just hit New York and not worry about sleeping for 3 days, just walk and walk and walk, and take it all in. I love the place. My son lives there. I have never felt in the least bit unsafe, whatever the time, day or night. Go to Wall Street and smell the money. Just walk into any of the buildings as if you owned them, and you will see the enormous entrance areas where they have pianists at grand pianos, take the exclusive lift and see the rich bankers. Oh, I envy you, so much to see ... Have a great, great time. You will capture the spirit. It is addictive.

You will be pushing it in 3 days.
Hotel 17 is a faily cheap hotel not to far from a subway .You will of course be spending as little time as possible in there so don't worry about the shared bathrooms and no breakfast.
use a local cafe for breakfast and it will see you through to dinner.
Here are some buget tips
1.Take the Staten island ferry ,It's free, yes free and it goes right past the statue of liberty .
2. Go to Century 21 it's a department store near Ground zero,Designer gear and fantastic prices ,there are some times street hawkers outside selling copies for the same price as you can get the real thing inside .
3.Go to the natural history museum ,They give you a sugested entry price and then you pay what you want to pay ($1 each is OK)
3.Use the subway $2 per jorney each if you miss your stop you can get on anouther train and go back with out paying any extra, the map seeems complicated at first but it's not that bad.
4.Don't buy your suveneers from the actual places get them from the shops in little china or from the Hells Kitchen area where they are more reasonably priced.
5 If you are going to see a Broadway show ,go to the ticket boothe under the Marriot on times square when it opens (soory slighly vaigeu) for 50% discount tickets ( these are proper tickets for decent seats ) I got front row for half the price of those at the back.
6.When it is cold the horses are not used on Central park but they have rikshaws .Haggel for a descent price.
7. Grayline buses run a great sevice you can choose from 48 hours all loops witch means you can hop on and off any where on there circuit for 48 hours ijncluding the nighttime tour or you can go for the three day all inclusive tour which we thought would have been a bit to much .There operatives gave us some realy good local hint and tips .
8. If you get the time go to Joe's dinner in Brooklyn for their fantastic cheesecake.
9. The Brooklyn dinner is just off times square and is posh enough without being too expensive

The best place for bargains will be Canal Street/Chinatown. You will find plenty of bargains there. You can even find fake purses, watches and other things there.
If you going to watch a Broadway show, you can buy ticket from the TKTS booth in Times Square. And many of main attraction has special discounts with the Citypass program.
Good luck and happy travels
