How old are you? Understand that a well-cared-for parakeet can live up to 15 years. Are you planning on going away to college or university? Most campuses will not allow parakeets; they have quite a loud call. When I left for college, I had to ask my mom to care for my beloved parakeet and it was hard. He missed me a lot and it was a lot of work for my mother. He died when I was a sophomore in college, in part, I think, because I was no longer there with him. So I waited until I was much more settled in life before investing in another bird. A year after I finished grad school, I got my parrot and he is the love of my life. I am settled now and if I do move, I am able to bring Zack with me wherever I go.

I know it's hard and you want a parakeet NOW, but try to remember that a pet is a life-time commitment and you will be much happier knowing that your bird is going to be your life-long companion and that you won't have to give him/her up when life takes you in different directions.

    LIE!!! jkjk

Make it seem like it would be the most amazing pet ever, and you will be responsible, which includes taking EXTRAORDNARY care of your current pets. Also, make him know that YOU will pay for everything. The pet store you go to should have budgies, in fact petco has them on sale right now for $12 a piece, but if you want a special breed try birdbreeders.com. Just explain to him that you are researching, and it is an easy pet and show him how well you take care of your other pets and you should have won him over in no time!

You should pick up an issue of Bird Talk Magazine the next time you visit your pet store. They have a list of breeders in the back catagorized by state. You could easily look one up and talk to a breeder further with your parents to see if it's the right pet for you.

My best friend owns a parakeet and they are really good fun so I would totally recemend them.

As for convincing your father to allow you to get one, that could be tricky. I don't know your father in person, so I'm not too sure about his personality. However I would try writing him a letter/email explaining how badly you want one, you will look after it completly, do extra chores if you are allowed to have it and you have down lots of research. If that doesn't work, sit him down and explain how you would really like one, good luck!

i have a parakeet, and he is really sweet. and totally not loud..tell your father that u will be responsible for it, and that you have done research and you think this would be a good pet for you. as for finding a breeder, look at www.petfinder.com and go to classified ads, they have a lot of people on there who are selling animals at a reasonable price to go to a good home. or look in the news paper..or you could always go to a petstore..either way good luck!

Try your local petstore! Keep your room clean and do chores and then tell your parents you think you are responsible enouhj for the bird and dont forget to pay for it! Also dont feed your bird sand grit or gravel! also it is a good idea to keep perches in your birds cage that are rock like to help file beak to proper level! Also keep a cuttle bone in its cage for calcium! birds get their calcium differently then we do cuz they r lactoseintolerent or cant have dairy products! Dont forget to offer your pet different fruits and veggies! Also go to google and type in what can i and cant i feed my parakeet? it gives great results for a happy healthy pet good luck!
