newbie soccer question about the offsides official?

Do the sideline officials-umpires-referees make other calls besides offsides?

Why isn't there more than one head referee on the playing field? Seems like alot of ground to cover... to be in the right position to make a fair call.

Law 6 of the Laws of the Game outlines the general duties of the assistant referees, however their duties in a given game remain subject to the decision of the referee. These duties usually include indicating:

When the whole ball has passed outside the field of play.

Which side is entitled to return the ball into the field of play.

When a player may be penalised for an offside offence.

When offences or other infringments of the Laws of the Game have been committed of which the referee does not have an adequate view.

An assistant referee may also be called upon by the referee to provide an opinion regarding matters which the referee requires clarification on. The assistant referees also usually assist the referee with substitutions, preparatory and administrative functions.

Also it's currently the law that a match can only have a single head referee because it's simply the rules. FIFA presumably has seen that one is enough.

They can make foul calls and assist the referee on calls he can't or doesn't see. The most famous example was the 2006 World Cup Final and the Zinedine Zidane incadent. When he headbutted Marco Matterazzi the ref didn't see it but the sideline judge saw it and told the ref who gave Zidane the red card.

    BTW love you name.
