Neighbors dogs pooped and peed on my yard today. What next?

They let their dogs run free several times a week so I know it's on purpose. I am thinking of bagging the crap and putting it on their doorstep. Do you think this is a good idea?

Update:

Edited to add, that I am a dog lover. But don't appreciate picking up other people's dogs crap.

Update 2:

Oh, yes, without a bag, great idea! I am also going to report them to the homeowners association. They are knowingly letting their dogs loose. I have seen them do this for about 2 months since they moved in. They let them out when they get home from work and before they leave in the mornings. Nice, huh? I would never let my dog or cat do this. It's RUDE.

Update 3:

They don't speak English. So talking to them is out of the question. I'm just going to do the poop on the porch annoymously and then let HOA take care of it.

Update 4:

I actually saw the two dogs do it. The first one lifted up his leg and peed right on my plants and then the other one tured in the gravel. I was pulling up to my house when it happened and witnessed the entire thing.

Update 5:

meant turded not tured.

Update 6:

I cannot put a fence around my front yard, it's against HOA and would look dumb.

Yes there are leash laws, but like I said I love dogs, but these are so ugly they would get put to sleep and I don't think that punishment fits the crime.

Update 7:

Why should I spend money on a deterrent? People need to keep their dogs on a leash. I don't have a chip on my shoulder about it, it's just annoying. I also think it's abusive and very bad pet ownership to let them run loose. This isn't the country we live in a very high traffic area. I don't care if these people like me or not. Knowing my husband he will have a talk with them about it. He won't put up with it. So we'll see what happens.

Update 8:

Oh and it's so not biodegradeable here. In the summer it just petrifies into wood, it'll last years. We get 115 degree temps and little rain here in the desert.

Update 9:

No dog crap isn't my worst problem in the world. Thank goodness! It's just a pebble in the road.

It sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder where your neighbors are concerned. Maybe they are blisfully oblivious to the situation and you have never mentioned it to them, so since they don't know, the dogs continue to do it. There are chemical repellants you know, and you could talk to the owners about this situation, clean the areas with detergent and bleach to erradicate the smell (dogs tend to go in places they have already peed and pooped before, the smell guides them to the spot), apply repellent, or install a humane sonic deterrent which you can get in any pet catalog.

If this is a personal issue and each party is just annoying each other, then find out if there is a city ordinance that covers this particular situation and report it. When and if you talk to your neighbors about it, it would be wise not to threaten them with action. If there is no response to your request, then just act. They will get the message.

Hmm...they don't speak English. What language do they speak? How can you communicate with them if they are unable to understand you? Most likely they don't know there could be consequences because these pet issues are still not regulated in most nations. Getting across to them in their language would not hurt at all and it would make them realize it is not exactly tolerated here. Once they have been informed, and if this situation continues, they can hardly argue ignorance of the law.

Bagging the crap and putting it on their doorstep will probably constitute an agression and you might even end up being slapped with a racial hatred issue. As ridiculous as it sounds, I've seen it happen. They may not speak the language, but they do know that overlitigation works...both ways.

So maybe some of my suggestions are not to your liking. Well, you posted the question and my answers are provided in good faith, too bad they weren't helpful. I wish you luck.

I get that you are upset and I agree that they are at fault but I think the fact that they "dont speak English" is a lame excuse for not trying to talk to them. The message isnt that complicated and I think you could get your point across somehow. What you are planning will first confuse and then anger them. How long are you planning on living in the neighborhood. I just think what you have planned is not keeping things in the longterm in perspective. GO talk to them. Make your point clear. Then if they keep doing it, thats another story. If there is a leash law in your area, you would be doing the neighborly thing AGAIN by telling them so. Some dog owners are not aware of this. Then if they continue doing it, report them. It really isnt hard to be a decent neighbor.

Edited to add: OK so now their dogs are ugly? Do you know how old you sound? Now the stakes are even because they are being inconsiderate and you are being childish. You are starting to sound like the kind of person who would rather whine and complain wasting tons of time rather than spend five minutes just doing the right thing and taking care of it. Think it over...

Speak to them kindly first, before doing anything drastic, 'Oh, i don't know if you were aware, but when your dogs are loose they come poop on my lawn. I take pride in my yard and don't like to have to clean up after them or have crap in my yard, please keep them out of my yard.' They know their dogs are loose, they may not realize they're messing in your yard all the time.

If that doesn't do it, I'm sure there would be a leash law in your town, call your animal control officer and ask- if you speak kindly to the neighbors and they do nothing, call and report their dogs when loose to the AC- maybe even video tape their animals loose, crapping in your yard, and let the town deal with it.

My neighbor's 2 dogs used to do this, having 6 of my own, I kinda gritted my teeth and beared it, luckily they stopped coming down- 2 more craps a day after 6 of my own dogs' was not THAT big a deal, but in was the principle. I'm sure I would have heard from them if my 6 crapped in their yard every day!

Ugggh, just saw they don't speak English- get a sign showing 'no dogs' (you know, the pict. with the line threw it, and put in in your yard where they can see it.

go talk with your neighbors and if this doesnt work go ahead and bag it up and send them a little "gift"

if not perhaps you can "borrow" a mates dog and let them return the favor.

i really dont know what else you can try short of contacting the athorities which may result in the dogs being taken away or put down which we dont want....im a major animal lover and a responsiable dog owner i carry poopie bags.

good luck with your problem i hope something works for you i know how frustrating this is.

EDIT : oooh they dont speak english perhaps then the home owners assoc. can be of assistance get thier support with a letter stating all the "doggie laws" leave copies taped to thier doors every time it happens along with the poo.

eventually they should get the hint if not the fines they recieve for the violations of the HOA rules may force them to have to move away.

Absolutely. Tell them their dogs left it behind when they came to visit. If they're rude enough to have no consideration for your property they should at least be made aware they you're aware. You may want to check with your local SPCA, many states have leash/restraint laws that make it a crime for animals to run loose. If they still don't get the hint you may want to anonymously call for an officer to come remove them. Maybe paying a fine would incline your neighbor to not allow their dogs free reign of the neighborhood.

i have the same situation with my neighbors..im a dog lover (have 2 10 week old doxie pups) but we are military and live in base housing which has very strict leash laws......basically if your yard isnt fenced your dog needs to be on a leash (with you at the other end of it) we live in a duplex and the people that live in the other half have a medium sized dog (some kind of terrier mix) and a couple weeks ago got an adult akita.....their smaller dog is never on a leash and runs around for an hour or two unattended. the larger one is on a runner cable in their backyard which is long enough for him to do his business in MY yard. now i wouldnt mind so much but for the fact that we have weekly yard inspections and dog crap in my yard will fail me on an inspection AND their large dog gets along fine with female dogs (their other dog is female) but hates male dogs including my puppy...he growls and lunges every time we walk outside so we have to go in the front yard for my dogs to go to the bathroom. its really annoying........after asking them several times to fix it and them saying no i had to contact the landlord and have them give them notice......they now have 72 hours to either start walking their dogs on leashes or put up a fence. try saying something to them......if they dont check the local leash laws if they are violating them turn them in...i know it sounds harsh but seriously not everyone is a dog lover and just because you wouldnt poison their dogs doesnt mean another neighbor wouldnt...plus car hazards etc. its actually abuse IMO to leave them run .

I used to have a neighbor who would let her dog out in front of the house, where he would immediately go to our front yard or the neighbor on the other side and poop, so I think I know what you mean about the "on purpose" part. After he got done, she would take him in. She was an older lady and I didn't make much of it, thinking maybe she didn't realize it was going on. But while talking to her one day she mentioned how much the thought of cleaning up dog poop annoyed her...

So when I would go clean up HER dog's poop, I would just toss it onto her lawn, so she would still have to clean it up and maybe get the added bonus of stepping in it. I think it's a good idea to leave them a bag of crap--hopefully they'll get the message.

I hate people who don't clean up after their dogs--they rank right up there with people who leave their kid's dirty diapers on the ground. I try to pick up my yard every day after mine and I always carry bags with me when I walk them. It's really not that hard and is just part of owning a dog.

Ppl dont often mean to cause offense by this they just think its not an issue.

I would talk to your neighbour tell them that the dogs have poo'd on your garden and ask them to pick it up. If they dont get a shovel pick it up and put it in their garden. Dont put it on the door step - if they come out and stand on it things might get a little aggitated.

I've had this problem in the past - a person walking their dog past my property let it poo three days in a row on my driveway. On the third I came running out the house and had the street up about how discussing it was and how its an offense and carrys a fine.

The fella didn't have a poop bag so I ran and go one of mine. i always pick up after my dog

Have you talked to them about it? You can call local animal control and report it. They will give your neighbors a notice about keeping the dogs on a leash or in a fenced-in yard when outside.. If they dont follow through with the notice, they can be given a fine or the dogs can be removed from the home.
