    Engineers already do.

When they design a object, a building, a circuit, a system, they are making a product or service that uses a minimal amount of resources. The resources being time, money, and physical materials.

Society governs what and how something is made. Society must be willing to pay for products and services that achieve its needs.

    Cheers and good luck!

I agree with Rutgersgroup, if an engineer does the job properly, they optimize each aspect of the task at hand.

I don't think it is an engineers job to enhance nature. Not that I'm sure what you mean by that statement. The best we can hope to do it not harm it.

A chemical engineer could design a nuclear reactor which would supply energy safely, inexpensively and easily replenished. The amount of waste generated per kilowatt hour is hugely more beneficial than other means.
