Sony all the way!!!! Sony is better in everything that they make. That is why they cost a little more.

Sony.
I hear the argument all the time that Canon is better because they been in the camera business forever and Sony is a newcomer. There may be a point there, but a digital camera, especially compact point and shoot cameras are a completely different beast than a film camera, and if I'm not mistaken Sony was in the digital camera business longer than Canon (remember the floppy disk based Mavica series?).
One more thing : it is spelled C A N O N not cannon canonn cannnonnnn or cannnnnnnnnnonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

If you're fighting over which brand is better, then it's not just your boyfriend who is stupid. Both of you are.
First of all, it's stupid to fight over something like that.
Second, and even if you were just discussing and not fighting, it'd still be absurd to compare brands, because both have individual models that *could* be better than certain other models from the other brand, and there simply is no way to establish an “average”. And it's irrelevant that you insist on speaking “in general”: there's no such thing as an “average camera better-ness”, so it's a moot point whether you want to talk about specifics or not.
Third, and even comparing two specific models from either brand, none of them will be necessarily better *for everyone*: different people are bound to have different preferences and needs, and thus consider better one camera or the other.
Therefore, you're having a completely pointless fighting/argument with your boyfriend, and calling him stupid because he isn't more able to be aware of that than you are.

Neither are better than the other... generally speaking. The same holds true for other brands. It is not about the brand, but rather, the product. I am sure that Sony may have superior products than Canon, while Canon will have superior products than Sony. We really are not comparing Apples to Apples here, folks. And our decision to pick a winner is based on a multitude of factors derived from our own personal experiences, choices and opinions. I am a professional videographer and work with my wife who is a professional photographer. We own high-end point-and-shoot for personal use, digital SLRs, consumer and professional grade video equipment. They are from Sony, Canon, Nikon, JVC, Fuji and others. Which one is best? I can only tell you what I think is best based on my experiences with them. For example, I prefer the Canon digital SLR I use, but my wife prefers her Nikon digital SLR. In the video department, we both agree that the Canon is superior based on our use. Does this mean it is better? No, it just means it fits our needs the best. The best way to determine what is best is to simply try out a product, regardless of the brand, and see what works for you. Keep an open mind, trust me it helps, and take them for a test drive. You may be surprised at how wrong or right you may be with your assumption of a product based on the brand. Believe me, I have experienced it and now I look at every product as it's own entity and never pre-judge it based on its brand... I hope this helps you make the right choice.

I'm afraid I'd have to side with your boyfriend.
Canon made cameras for years, they have the experience and technology for it. Sony made TV's, camcorders and such. They entered the camera business with the birth of digital. So their experience is... well... limited.
While their sensors may be great, it is not just the sensor that defines the camera... It's also the optics, the mechanics and more. Many of Canon's current cameras are made on the bases of their older film models. These are the camera bodies that were tested and adjusted for years.
Go with the pros!
P.S. A note to the answerer before me:
Cannon is a kind of weapon
Canon is a camera brand, and unless the question is about comparing the prospects of shooting pictures vs. shooting explosive shells - "canon" is a correct spelling.

well, i don't think that your boyfriend is stupid.
1st and foremost, i have been using Cannon and Nikon products for the past 9 years and i have also did some reviews on Sony cameras.
So far, i have grown to like Cannon much more and i did not really like the sony models as the Sony camera isn't that user friendly and dosen't offer certian features that i use.
Another thing is that Sony Cameras do not share Memory cards with other brands. so if you choose to change your camera brand, you'll have all of your memory sticks stuck there

I've owned a couple Sony cameras and they are pretty good IMO. I've also read that Canons are good too. But both manufacturers have models that pretty much s**k. So I'll just say both of you are right.

First and foremost what are you basings' for sony is better? Honestly I prefer the cannons over sony as sony is more of a style gimmick. And i base my answers on research on various model # etc. And also there are always pros and cons to each side. so it's best to pick on what your needs are. Happy deciding.

I gave my Sony to my daughter because my Canon was so much better. Your boyfriend sounds pretty smart to me.
