Why do gay men lisp?
I notice so many gay men speak in an effiminate tone of voice and lisp alot. I am not trying to sound like an *** here, and I am not a "hater" but as a straight man, this phoenomenon has always vexed me. I know guys who "turned out to be gay" and they all have the lisp now. Funny thing is that when we were all kids, none of them spoke this way.....or liked showtunes for that matter! lol. Seriously...what gives?
Allow me to edit this for a minute to answer a few of the "answers" given. First, I did not post this in an offensive manner, so please- do me the favor of dropping your attitude. Through communication comes enlightenment. Secondly, I did not say "ALL" gay men lisp. I know three gay guys who grew up near me. All three now lisp and act/speak very effiminately. We are all friends still, so yes- at least in my experience, "MOST" gay men i know have a lisp. Thirdly, my wife is British and majority of her family lives here.....none lisp.
I am not speaking out of hatred here, folks. I would also bet I'm not the first straight guy to ask this question- so there's obviously something to it! If this is all old, re-hased stuff- don't answer the question. But for those actually kind enough to take their time and post their thoughts- I thank you!
Cheers,
CK

Well for one, "lisp" is not a proper description. A lisp would be replacing the "s" with a "th" sound. Like a person with a real lisp, wouldn't even be able to say the word! They'd say "lithp", saying it outloud is actually rather funny to try.
Media progression of this stereotype (that has been around in America before it was even legal to be gay) until some of the younger ones adapt it to "fit in" to a stereotypical group. Like some people wish to fit into the preps, nerds, jocks, gangsters, emos, etc. It's all about finding oneself in the end. But, the majority do NOT talk like this, you just happen to notice the minority more because of this trait.

I was just asking my boyfriend the same question. The boy that I went to school yet didn't come out officially until years later. Before no lisp or "accent'.. now, total accent. Before he would say "sup girl", now it's ohhhh myyya gossssssssssssh girla! Same dude, different accents. Someone pointed out the community and picking up accents to fit in, whether subconsciously or not. I think this is the case. I think that seems like the best fit. Had a friend move from hick town Kentucky to Colorado for years. When she came back, she had completely lost her country accent.

It's called in-talk or in-speak. Every community does it - African American, Mexican, Christians, Jews. Everyone. When you're with your own group, you emulate the speech patterns, vernacular and mannerisms of the people around you. It's a way of identifying as one of the group. Not nearly all group members do it, but it is a phenomenon that exists.
I don't know how it evolved that gay in-talk has taken on the patterns that it does. To me, it is what it is. It's neither good nor bad.
Another term you might want to know is internalized homophobia, which is what the "offended" responders are experiencing. The term refers to refers to negative feelings that a gay person might have towards himself because of his homosexuality. The forms it may take can vary from outright shame, denial, or self-injury, to hating on other gay people and more unconscious behaviors as well. In this case, it refers to an inability to acknowledge or embrace a phenomenon (i.e. in-talk) due to fear of being associated with one's own group.

Maybe they lisp because too much penis hitting the tonsils and jarring them around a bit. Or maybe it the ol balls across the nose shtick and it shakes them up a tade.....

All gay men lisp because of burn marks they receive on their tongues from to much friction from the shaft of the penis going in and out of their mouths.
