Has anyone else had problems with Tri-Sprintec (generic Ortho Tri-Cyclen)?
I am using Tri-Sprintec (generic form of Ortho Tri-Cyclen) to regulate my period. (November and December, it lasted from a week and a half to two weeks, but with moderate bleeding.) I am on my second pack now. I have had 3 separate problems while being on this medication:
1.) My period between my two packs was really heavy.
2.) I had a horrible migraine 3 days into my second pack, and I get maybe one migraine a year, if that. It's so not like me.
3.) I have felt nauseous off and on for the past week. (I'm nearing the end of week 1 on my second pack.)
I have 3 questions for women who have taken Tri-Sprintec:
1.) Have you had similar side-effects?
2.) Did you switch to brand-name Ortho Tri-Cyclen? If so, did that decrease the side-effects?
3.) If you are no longer taking Tri-Sprintec or Ortho Tri-Cyclen, what medication are you taking? If Ortho Tri-Cyclen is going to do the same thing, I'm going to talk to my doctor about getting something else.
Thank you!
Jennifer
My prescription is written for Ortho Tri-Cyclen. I have tried Ortho Tri-Cyclen a few years ago and never had a problem. In regard to what Kir S said, sometimes the generic doesn't treat the individual the same way as brand-name, and it sounds like with birth control pills, this is the case. I'm going to try brand name next month just to see how that treats me. Thanks for the answers so far.
I should say my prescription has "Ortho Tri-Cyclen" written on it, not "Tri-Sprintec," which allows me to get the brand name next month without having to ask the doctor for another prescription.

I did take the Tri-Sprintec. I ended up changing for the following reasons:
My period was much heavier on this pill than on the Ortho. I am stumped as to why this occurred. I gave the generic a few months, but my cramps were unbearable and eventually I returned to Ortho.
I felt was nauseated when taking the generic. I thought at first maybe it was because I had missed a pill and had doubled up the next morning. But the ill stomach persisted and I also began with the headaches. It didn't get as serious as migraines, but it was enough to make me switch back.
Now I use Ortho-Lo. I didn't gain any weight (except at the very beginning which has now come off), it has cleared up my skin, and I have no side effects. I would talk to your doctor if things keep up this way!
Good Luck!

If you look at the possible side effects of birth control, migraines is on the list. That effect is more common if you have a history of migraines. I was once told by my doctor that it's not a good idea to use generic for hormone-based medications. The levels can vary from the original medication, resulting in stronger side effects. I would suggest going back to your doctor and talking to her about your side effects. There are other types of pills out there with different hormones that you might have better luck with. It's definately a good idea to switch pills if you're experiencing symtoms that are making your life more uncomfortable.

Mood swings are not a side effect of this medication. People take this medication for that reason in the first place. However, if you continue with that problem, you might want to switch to a monophasic birth control pill like Alesse or Lo-Ovral.
