Excel problem - I had a problem with my Excel, I deleted the PERSONALXLS file....?

....not knowing that it was a system file. Now when I start an Excel file, from My Documents, I get a: personal.xls is locked for editing, dialog box. This is getting on my nerves as there are loads of problems and it's very slow. Can somebody tell me how to reset my PERSONAL.XLS file to how it should be. PLEASE!!!

Is your system slow, or just Excel? If it is just Excel, then try the Detect and Repair option on the Help menu. That may find some problems and avoid a total reinstall. You will probably need the initial installation CD if it finds any problems.

The Personal.xls problem is unlikely to be related to the other problem. That file isn't necessary for Excel to function. It is simply a file where your personal VBA macros can be stored. If the file exists, then Excel will load it at startup.

If you deleted the file the only thing that would happen is that you would lose those personal macros. You can easily recreate it by recording a macro (Tools --> Macro --> Record New Macro) and choosing to save it in Personal.xls instead of the current workbook.

You might also check the recycle bin to see if it has a copy of the file. It should be there unless you chose to completely delete it. There are also plenty of undelete programs out there that may be able to recover the file.

Assuming you have a registered copy the just reinstall from Microsoft or your registered disc.
